The first year of college is one to remember forever. Being on your own for the first time, dorming, meeting new people from different states and countries, finding your way around town, it can all be so new and exciting, but yet scary and confusing. Being away from all your high school friends is a change you were not necessarily prepared for... but don't worry because you will be meeting these 5 types of friends soon enough!

1. The Forced Friends

These are usually the first people you meet in college - Your roommate, suitemates, and hallmates. These are the people you see everyday, so therefore you have to be friendly and civil with. Also, you must be careful to not step on any toes or anger people. During the first couple weeks, you usually tiptoe quietly around your dorm, being careful to not disturb anyone's sleep schedule with your noises or lights (Little do they know that you'll eventually grow tired of this routine). Sometimes you'll become best friends with your roommate and share everything like in all the Hollywood movies! Or other times, you'll find them buried in your hidden Oreo stash and want to rip their head off.

2. The Mom & Dad Friends

These are the friends that always tend to have a grocery store, pharmacy, and a doctor's office in their bag. Also, their suggestions for things to do always revolve around what kind of coupons they have. Yet, the best part of these friends is when you need someone to vent to at 3am, because you know they will always be there and have your back no matter what.

3. Parties Are Priority Friends

These are the friends you might have to worry about. They always want to go out every single weekend and "have a good time!"... which really means have you take care of them when they come home blasted wasted. Enjoying yourself at college is something that should be important, but these friends do not understand that they are at college for the goal of getting an education and a degree someday.

4. The Try Hard Friends

These are the friends you need by your side. They push you to do your best and even engage in some friendly competition to make sure you keep up with them. You are inspired by them to keep on track with your studies and maybe even work to get ahead! They usually have the best study tricks for exams and an entire tutoring center in their brain to help you if you get stuck somewhere along the way.

5. The Homesick Friends

These are the friends that cover their walls with photos, memories, and things from their hometown. They are reluctant to go out because the dorm is what they know and like (Well, change is sometimes scary). Also, they are always on FaceTime with friends or family from home, even when you are trying to quietly study. But, when they introduce you to their people from home, you always feel awesome knowing that they want their friends and family to know about their cool new friend: you!

Overall, friends should encourage you to stay healthy and pursue what you want to do. Never should someone try to influence you in ways that could be harmful. Be careful who you choose to surround yourself with in college, but remember to always enjoy the ride!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
