5 Tips for Securing your Summer Internship

1. Keep your LinkedIn updated.

Try to get a high quality, professional photograph taken for your LinkedIn profile picture. As for the written sections, make sure the text is grammatically correct and that the sentence structures are coherent. If you have used specific keywords to describe a particular experience, make sure they can be understood by someone who wasn't involved. One example might be to make sure acronyms are spelled out. For example, you should write 'Executive Board' or 'Leadership Team' instead of writing 'I was on the EB'.

2. Consider your network as a valuable resource.

Sometimes, small talk can lead to opportunity. Don't underestimate what advice, opportunities or contacts may come out of a simple chat about careers or school. The more you throw yourself into new hobbies and clubs, the more chances you have to meet people who have similar interests and goals to yours.

3. Do your research.

Start by searching on I-Link, which has internships and job opportunities for University of Illinois students. This site is a great resource and a great starting point. Searching hashtags and keywords on Twitter can also reveal a number of recently posted internships. Then again, if there is a certain company you would like to work for, think about writing a speculative application (which means you ask them for any opportunities that may not be publicly advertised). This shows initiative, which can impress employers.

4. Go to the Career Center.

The Career Center is a valuable resource on campus with dedicated staff who want to help you! Stop by with your resume and job description and have a chat to an advisor. They will be able to look over what you've written and give you some advice as to how to improve. This will help your chances of being selected!

5. Communicate and be positive.

Don't worry about rejection, it happens to everyone. Some companies may not even respond to an application if they have too many applicants. Nevertheless, try to get some feedback on how you can improve applications for other internships. Learn from your mistakes, and don't give up. Keep in contact with employers, and thank them for their time considering you for the role. Be respectful, and try not to be too disheartened. Besides, you never know if they'll contact you about future job opportunities.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
