Nobody likes moving. It's a fact. Things go missing, packing is a pain, and unpacking is a nightmare. However, in the last three months my family has completed six moves. So I feel equipped to share some tips I learned in the process.
1. Do your research
When picking a moving truck company, when picking a new place to live, and even when picking the type of boxes you want to pack your life into; there is always more to know and the more you know the easier the move will go.
2. Label Everything
When you are packing all your valuable possessions label the box with the room it should be going to in your new place and the types of items that are in it. For instance, when moving a box of pots and pans the label should read "kitchen. Sauce pans, skillets, frying pan, large pot". For the items not going in boxes, label them with a sticker with the room destination on them. Like the sofa with a "living room" sticker just so you and the movers know where it goes and won't have to maneuver it around later.
3. Pack the Necessities on Top
Put the things that you are most likely to use first either at the top of the box or in its own box. Shower essentials, toothbrush, toothpaste, and several pairs of weather appropriate clothes should be easy to find when you move.
4. Unpack Necessities First
When you get to your new place, unpack the kitchen stuff, bathroom stuff, and your clothes before you unpack the living room stuff. You can live without your decorative wall art and bookshelf for a few days until you get settled.
5. Create a To-Do List
Calling water, electric, gas, and cable/wifi companies should definitely be on the list.
Bonus Tip: Keep calm
Things might go wrong but if you are calm you can deal with it more easily.
If you stay organized and make a plan. The move will go much more smoothly.
