5 Tips For Incoming College Freshmen

Freshman year of college is definitely a challenge and learning experience. If you haven’t been given good advice about what to expect and how to be efficient in college, then the transition could very well be more difficult. Realizing that many high school seniors come into college without good advice, I wrote this article to give incoming college freshman the advice that they need in order to have a productive and enjoyable freshman year. I have come up with five useful tips for incoming freshman. Focus on learning, try new things in order to develop new interests, get to know people, manage your time well, and maintain a positive attitude!

1. Focus on learning.

After all, you are at college to learn! You would be surprised how many college freshmen let this principle slip away in their first semester. Don’t let that be you! In order to fully capitalize on your learning experience, sit in a part of the classroom where you are going to be most attentive and engaged in class. For me, this was the the front middle. Additionally, really focus on understanding class material for the purpose of learning it, not just for the purpose of obtaining a good grade. Lastly, get to know your professors. This will make classes so much more interesting!

2. Try new things in order to develop new interests.

Developing new interests is not only exciting, but critical for self-development, mental health, and gaining new perspectives. In order to develop new some interests, you must get out of your comfort zone a little bit. I highly recommend joining clubs on campus and trying new things. The benefits of joining clubs on campus are that you meet a ton of your peers, you may develop new interests, you may be able to put your talents to work, and you may be able to help others on campus and in the community.

3. Get to know people.

This effort could very well be the most rewarding effort that you could possibly make! When you first get to college, all the other freshmen are in the same boat that you are in. They most likely don’t have any friends on campus the first week either. Take initiative and introduce yourself to as many people as you can. And once again, this may require you to come out of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to be more outgoing! College is a lot more fun when you meet new people and build great relationships with them. Don’t overlook this tip!

4. Manage your time well.

This skill is critical to being productive and successful in college! Staying on top of your school work is the difference between an enjoyable semester and a stressful one. You cannot procrastinate and expect to be an effective student while still having time to do other fun things outside of the classroom. The difference between the students who enjoy college and the students who get overly stressed out is time management. Don’t procrastinate! Get into the library early and punch the clock! Complete tasks days in advance whenever possible, that way you won’t be stressing when assignment deadlines are approaching.

5. Maintain a positive attitude!

Attitude has a snowball effect on your life. If you don’t have a great attitude about going to class and being at the college that you are at, then you can forget about ever being happy there. Maintaining a positive attitude about going to class and doing your work are necessary for an enjoyable semester. With a positive attitude you will be more productive and efficient with your studies. And being more productive and efficient with your studies will leave you with more free time to do as you please. I can’t stress enough the tremendous impact that a positive attitude will have on your college experience!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
