Many of you know that I ran my first marathon a few months ago. It was one of the hardest challenges in my life, but also one of my proudest moments. So here are some tips and tricks I have for those of you that are thinking about running your first marathon.
1. Don't be afraid to walk, or take short breaks.
You're running 26.2 miles, it's 100 percent OK to stop and relax for a few minutes. It's going to take awhile for you to finish the course anyway, so take your time so that you don't hurt yourself. Plus, if there are water stops or food stops, then stop to recover and replenish your electrolytes and carbs. Even if you don't feel like eating in the beginning of the race, stop and take some food with you, because you will need it later (I ignored my first stations and suffered greatly because of it).
2. Bring a lot of supplies.
Invest in a portable water bottle or water pack to take with you so you can stay hydrated during the race: Hydration is key. Bring two pairs of clothes, one for the end of the race and the other in case you need to make a quick change at the halfway point. I got unlucky. My course was very muddy because of rain from the night before, and I didn't come fully prepared, so running the last few miles in wet and muddy clothes in the rain wasn't fun. Plus, it can help prevent blisters, rashes or irritation, so take some extra clothes. Finally, find your most comfortable pair of shoes to walk in (can't be your running shoes) and have those ready to change into after the race.
3. Scout the course.
Run some of your workouts on parts of the course, and walk most of it (don't run the whole thing, save that for race day) so you don't get surprised on race day. Form race day strategies (where to run faster, where to take it slow, where to walk, etc). If you find trails or parks that have similar terrain as your course, then plan most of your workouts there so your body gets accustomed to the terrain.
4. Don't change any routines.
However you work out, whatever you eat, whatever you wear to work out, do not change any of it. Keep everything the same so you don't face any unnecessary complications on the big day. Don't try anything new just because you heard that it can make you faster or help you do better. Stick with what's tried and true. If the course allows it, then run with your headphones if you trained with music.
5. Just have fun!
You are about to join the craziest runners in one of the hardest races ever. I mean, runners are crazy, but marathon runners are just flat-out insane. You're doing 26.2 miles nonstop, so take your time and have as much fun with it as you can. Don't worry about how well others are doing or your time, just focus on finishing. Finishing the race will give such a sense of fulfillment no matter what place you finish in. So get out there and have fun! Best of luck!
