5 Times You Need Your Parents In College

Going off to college means being on your own. Sure, that's all fine and dandy, until you just really need a chat with your mom or dad but you can't get it. Here are 5 times you just needed that support in person while being in college.

1. After the first week of cafeteria food.

After going through a couple semesters of college you get used to the cafe food, but I remember after my first week as a freshman, all I wanted was my mom's cooking. Granted, the first week all I ate was cheeseburgers, french fries and chicken sandwiches. It got old pretty quickly. But a good way to avoid really missing your moms food (even though you always will), is to remember to change it up a bit. Instead of going for that cheeseburger, try a salad or some pasta. It may look a little strange sometimes, but nine times out of ten, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

2. When you get sick.

As I write this, I have a pile of tissues surrounding me, so this point is extremely relevant. When you get sick at school and your parents are over an hour away, you feel a little bit helpless. All you want is your dad putting a cool washcloth on your forehead and your mom cooking up your favorite dish to eat when your sick. Mine's mac and cheese, and I can't tell you how bad I've been craving it. I get through it by doing all the things my parents would do to help me and even give them a call. It's not nearly the same but it's better than just feeling sorry for myself.

3. When you're going through heartbreak.

We all go through it, ladies and gents. Whether your boyfriend broke up with you, or your best friend ditched you three times in a row, heartbreak happens. And in those moments, we all want to be in our parents arms instead of being wrapped up in blankets on our XL Twin bed all alone. When I've gone through heartbreak, a phone call always helps! Just hearing my mom or dads voice is an instant feeling of comfort and relief.

4. In the middle of a mental breakdown.

Your car battery died, you spilled coffee on your five page paper and the caf was all out of grilled cheese sandwiches, all in one day. Okay, some of that was a little dramatic, but we all have had that day where it feels like nothing can go right. Or it can even be a day that we just don't have enough time to do the twenty different things that need to be done. The solution is a common theme today: give your parents a call. It really does make you feel like a little piece of home is right next to you.

5. When you're feeling homesick.

Being homesick is something that I feel like a lot of people try to hide. Personally, I'm proud to be homesick. I'm proud to be in a family that is loving and supportive and that I can genuinely miss. Don't be afraid to admit your homesick because I promise, everyone is at one point. Maybe it's not a family member you miss, maybe its a pet, a place or an old friend. But don't be ashamed. When I feel homesick, I like to look back at pictures with friends and family just to be reminded of the great memories. And of course, giving the person you miss a phone call always helps too.

I know my solutions were repetitive and seem overly simple. But sometimes, a simple solution is all you need! So give your mom and dad a call, even if everything is going great! They want to hear from you and hearing, "I love you," makes a good day that much better.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
