5 Things You Overlook When Moving

Moving can be fun, but it can also be stressful. Not only do you have to physically move your things from one place to the other, you also have to pack everything, which is arguably worse. Having just moved into a new house myself, I can tell you firsthand that there are plenty of things that you overlook. Here are just a few.

1. How Much Stuff You Actually Have

Packing up all of your belongings isn't really bad itself. All it really is is packing things up into suitcases and boxes and then transporting them to your new place. However, once you realize how much stuff you actually have, that's where things get difficult. You feel emotionally attached to all of your things and hate to let things go, but you also don't need ten beachfront posters.

2. Forgetting who brought what

When you first move to a new place, you and your roommates think that you won't forget who brought what and won't need to label anything. However, when you move out, you quickly realize that you're not sure if either Sarah or Heather brought the frying pans and soon enough you're fighting over the other kitchen utensils. Take it from me, you will thank yourself later on if you make a list of your things and who brought what.

3. Transporting Everything

One of the hardest things about moving is figuring out how to move everything from one place to the other. I took at least ten trips over the course of three days moving all of my things into my new house. The bigger things are what get you the most. We ended up having to strap a dresser to the back of a friend's car in order to transport it. Renting a moving van may not be necessary, but if you have friends who have bigger cars who are able to help you out, hit them up.

4. Buying New Furniture

If you are fortunate to find a place that comes fully furnished, then congratulations to you. For the rest of us, we have to figure out who's going to buy the couch and if anyone is able to bring a TV. Many college students need to get rid of furniture quick so there are a lot of affordable, used things that can you can get ahold of. You just have to know where to look.

5. Setting up Wi-Fi, electricity, water, etc.

After you finish moving, you probably just want to curl up in your new bed and watch a few episodes of that new show you're binge watching on Netflix, that is until you remember that you don't have Wi-Fi for the time being. Utilities have to set up separately and it will be a rough first few days if you don't get them set up right away. To save the hassle, figure out who will do what beforehand so that your new place will be up and running in no time.

Moving can be stressful, but it can also be fun. Moving into your dorm room, first apartment, or first house are big steps in your life and you should be happy that you are finally adjusting to adult life. That is until you realize that the rent is due and you don't have a job yet. But, that's a different issue.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
