Growing up around my grandparents has definitely had a positive impact on my life.

From the moment I was born, I have been surrounded by many people who love and support me through my life decisions. Four of these people are known to me as my grandparents. I have been so blessed to be able to know all four of my grandparents and even a great-grandmother. Here are 10 things you can relate to if you grew up around your grandparents as well.

1. Conversations with them are always interesting.

Honestly, my grandparents are some of the most interesting people I know. My conversations with them always either leave me laughing at some embarrassing moment they have shared with me, or feeling proud to have come from the family I was born into. Some of my favorite stories come from my deceased paternal grandfather and his stories about when he was in the Navy during World War Two. I will treasure the memories of these story times with my grandparents for a lifetime.

2. Their home becomes your home.

I have always felt so relieved to come and visit my grandparents' homes after a long day, just like my own home. They are always so welcoming when I come to visit, and they always make sure that I know I always have a place to stay when I come there. There is just something about going to their house that makes all of the problems I am dealing with go away.

3. They get to know your friends, and treat them like their own grandchildren.

I have always been so thankful that my grandparents always seem to get along so well with my friends. They invite them over to eat, and they get to know them because they know how important they are to me. My grandmother even keeps Mountain Dews in stock for my boyfriend when he comes over to eat.

4. They share their hobbies with you.

One of my most treasured possessions is an Alabama quilt that I made with my grandmother. Not only is the quilt beautiful, but the memories behind it are ones that I will always remember. The time spent with her making the quilt taught me a new skill, but it also gave me another thing my grandmother and I had in common.

5. They give the best advice.

Whenever I am dealing with a problem, my grandparents are usually some of the first people that I tell. They know many things about life, and usually can help me solve the problem or give me an idea what to do about it. They do not judge me, and they are always willing to help me. They want to see me succeed in everything that I do, and they will give me the advice I need to achieve my goals.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
