Five Things Wrong With This Generation

"I wish I was born in an earlier generation." You don't hear many of the young adults and teenage kids saying this. Why should they? The world today is more advanced. Technology has improved tremendously in the past decade and is a major part of our society. Who would want to go back to the days of no technology, vehicles, or money? Well, I would because the ideas and values of people have indeed changed. Our generation today is corrupt which is leading to many problems and this is how:

1. Happiness means being rich.

There are too many people who believe to be happy you have to be rich. They strive to make as much money as they can even if it makes the people around them, including their own family, miserable. When did the world get this way? The American dream used to be known as coming to America to be happy and free with your family. Now people come to America to make money. Sure, money is nice to have but there are greater things in life. Sometimes all you need is a loving family and amazing friends.

2. People communicate through cell phones and social media.

Technology has pretty much eliminated the art of personal connections. Nobody communicates verbally anymore. People use dating websites then continue conversations through text messaging. When you communicate in person with each other it brings a connection that you can’t have through texting. People tend to act completely different through the internet or cell phones, so you don’t get to see the real them. Families are also becoming less connected because during lunch, dinner, or just family time people are glued to their phones. They aren’t playing board games or talking about how their days were anymore. People are just consumed in the technology of the world today.

3. God is being pushed out of society.

We live in a time where God is not a priority. They are taking prayer out of schools and trying to take the “one nation under God” part out of the Pledge of Allegiance. If we deny God then we are teaching the younger generations to deny God and become corrupt. This means more people will commit the sins we all grew up learning to avoid. Denying God is a way to start chaos in the world. If we continue this way of life, society as we see it will eventually cease to exist and our world will be chaotic.

4. Kids aren’t being kids.

Back in the old days when there was no television, video games, or cell phones, kids used to spend their free time outside. I can remember the countless days of exploring and playing hide and seek in the woods. This helped kids stay active rather than sitting in the house all day like most do now, which is why the obesity rate in children is higher than it was in the past years. It’s sad to not see as many kids outside using their imaginations anymore. Those days were some of the best days of my life, and I don’t think it’s right that there are so many kids losing out on this opportunity because of all the new technology. You are only that young and care-free once.

5. Love has no value.

What ever happened to love actually meaning something? It is sad to see how many people take advantage of this. Young people aren’t taking the time to get to know each other anymore. They’re judging people off of looks rather than personality. Also, many don’t want a relationship, but they still want someone to spend time with, and this is leaving many people hurt. Why would you have a relationship with somebody if you do not see them in your future? People used to give their all and fight for the love they wanted. There was no talking to someone one week, then the next week finding another love interest. This generation has lost the beauty of real love and what it means. There still are a few old souls out there, but overall it is tragic to see how most people handle love these days.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
