Moving out is something we can never truly be ready for. We all think we’re ready, but more than likely aren’t. Here are a few things that will hopefully help anyone moving out for the first time.
1. Laundry happens more often than you think.
OK, so obviously you're going to have to do laundry, but be warned how often you have to do it. At least once a week, whether it's clothes, bedsheets, towels or whatever the case may be, laundry is something that happens often. Be warned.
2. Learn to cook.
Quick shout out to my parents for always cooking and teaching me to cook from a young age. It's because of you guys I don't struggle with this. Seriously, though, cooking is an incredibly important part of living on your own. Cooking at home will help you stay healthy as well as cut down on spending. Plus, your cooking will usually taste better than fast food once you get the hang of it!
3. Clean up after yourself.
This is mainly for those of us living with roommates. One of the most important things you can do is clean up after yourself. Do your dishes, throw away trash, clean your side of the room, etc. It'll keep everything looking fresh and help to keep peace with roommates.
4. Remember to take care of yourself.
This is really basic, but it's so easily forgotten. Remember, it's OK to take breaks or put aside a day for yourself. Remember to eat, drink water and just to take care of yourself. We so easily forget to put ourselves first, but it's important to do.
5. Call your parents regularly.
Whether you can't find something in Kroger or you're having a bad day, give your parents a call. If you don't have time for a call, shoot them a text. They miss you a hell of a lot, no matter what you think. Give them a call, tell them you love them and that you're OK. They love you, and they worry. Moving out doesn't mean you need to grow apart from your parents. Keep your relationship strong, and talk to them often.
