Why do we put off sleep? Sleep is something that we all need, and most of the time, once we do fall asleep, we want to stay in bed! So why do we avoid going to bed all the time? The following are some reasons why we may decide to procrastinate getting into bed. There are many reasons, but perhaps it would help to make sleep a priority.
1. You Have Too Much To Do
This is perhaps one of the most infamous reasons because sometimes it feels like our to-do lists are endless. A lot of times it is homework or household chores...but if we don't get the sleep we need, we won't be able to do our work as well the next day. If we really want to be productive, we have to get sleep.
2. Anxiety
Another common obstacle to sleep is anxiety. This one is harder to control, but there are some things that may help. Let out a big sigh! Sometimes that just takes the weight of the day off your shoulders. Perhaps it helps to focus on your breath, like counting in for eight counts, holding for eight, and letting it out for eight counts. Or maybe it is listening to calming music that does the trick. Drinking some decaf tea before bed may also help to soothe your qualms.
3. Technology
Put that phone down! Put the computer away! Try not to make it a habit of going on social media as you climb into bed. Snapchat, Facebook, or Twitter all have their way of sucking us in. Searching the web can lead us to get swept away in a wave of curiosity until we realize that a half hour has already gone by. If it helps, set a rule for yourself that after 10pm you won't go on social media or your phone. By the way, the blue light from technological devices tricks your body into thinking that it is still daytime and, therefore, may cause you to not be able to fall asleep as easily.
4. You Want to Make the Most of Your Day
I know what it feels like to get all the way through the day and not have a spare moment to do something that seems relaxing or fun. It is tempting to want to sacrifice that extra half hour or hour of sleep to get that reward of your favorite leisure activity. If this is the case, maybe it is time to schedule your relaxation time earlier in the day as a non-negotiable. That way, you won't have to choose between sleep and fun.
5. Procrastination
Whether it is simply not wanting to take off your makeup or go through your nightly regime, getting up and just doing it is way more worthwhile than putting it off. The cost is using up the precious time you could be spending asleep. If you need someone to encourage you to go to bed, ask a friend to hound you. It can be helpful :)
Good luck getting your rest! Remember, it is very important.
