For some of us, school may have already started while others are still awaiting that exciting first day of college. And as the day comes closer to when all of us new freshmen arrive to campus ready to start our new college lives, there are some new things that we can look forward to. Whether it's finally getting away from home or it's living the college life, going off to college can be an exciting time.
1. Making new friends
A lot of people I've been talking to who have gone to college say that the friends that you make in college are your friends you'll have forever. I'm always open to meeting new people and I'm excited to find friends I can hang out with and talk to or to study with. I'm sure it won't be too hard to find friends with what it feels like a gazillion people on campus. I hope I find really good friends that I can have a good time with and can count on when I need them.
2. Being away from home
We have all gone on the occasional sleepover or overnight field trip or retreat, but living away from your family for a few years can be exciting and make you feel a little bit more independent. I'm not saying that I won't miss my family, I will surely miss them, but I feel that part of the college experience is to live on campus. You won't have to miss them for that long either because of the holiday breaks in between. Plus it will be fun to decorate your dorm room to make it feel more like home, and it's one the most exciting parts.
3. Living with a roommate
I was not the one in my family to have to share a room with another sibling so I've never known what it really feels like to have to share a room with another person. But I'm excited to meet my roommate and see what it's like to share a room with someone else. My roommate seems really nice and I hope we can become really good friends.
4. Being more independent
At college you don't have an adult following you around to make sure you're studying, or making your meals, doing your laundry or making sure you're doing the right thing. You have to start being more of an adult and doing things for yourself. For some this may be scary and may not be comfortable. For others it can be empowering and some may be ready to make decisions on their own. I feel prepared for this new change as part of the college life.
5. Facetiming my family
There will be times when I won't have anything to do or when I will be a little homesick and I will want someone to talk to. I love my family and I don't know what I would do without them. My little sister says she wishes she could move in with me and I smiled at that and realized how much I will miss her. I'm sure I will talk with my family here and there when I'm not really doing anything. I'm looking forward to telling them all the great things I'll be doing. Plus we will be getting another puppy soon and will definitely want to see pictures of her.
