5 things I wish I'd known entering my senior year

The adults were right. Time really does go too fast.

5 things I wish I'd known entering my senior year

In about a month and a half, I will be starting college. On one hand, I am over the moon excited. But on the other hand, I feel like I am not ready at all. As I've reflected the past few weeks, there are things I wish I would have known going into my senior year.

1. Enjoy it while it lasts.

When I started my senior year, almost every single adult I encountered told me to enjoy it, because it would go by fast. One of my goals for the school year was to cherish every moment. I think I accomplished that goal, but I'm still sitting here wondering where the time went. I can now say from experience that it does go by fast. Cherish every day you have in school, because you'll miss it when it's over.

2. APPLY. FOR. SCHOLARSHIPS. EARLY.

I cannot stress this enough. I spent so much time applying to scholarships on the wrong sites. You should not have to pay to apply for a scholarship!! Apply for local scholarships! I've also found ScholarMe and FastWeb to be helpful sites.

3. Sometimes it'll feel like you're making the wrong decision.

I chose to attend college after high school. As it gets closer and closer to the start of the semester, I've felt a great deal of doubt about my major and future career. But as confusing and scary things might feel sometimes, I'm doing what I love. I hope the same for you, whether you choose to attend college or not.

4. College is not the only option out there.

A lot of people I talk to that are still in high school feel like college is being pushed on them by counselors, teachers, and/or parents. But college isn't for everyone! I chose to attend college because I love to learn and I wanted to expose myself to as much as I could so I can be the best musician I can be. But keep in mind, there plenty of jobs you can get that don't require a college education.

5. This is your life.

Your senior year of high sschool can be an overwhelming time. What I want to stress most is that your life is exactly that. Your own. Don't allow anyone to push you into doing something you don't want to do. You're an adult now. You can do anything you want! No matter what you choose to do, I hope it makes you happy.

Good luck!!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
