It's 5 a.m and you've successfully stayed up for more than 24 hours completing the 10 page paper that's due at 9:30. Your eyes feel glued shut and somehow there is bits of ramen stuck in your hair. You feel like a zombie and look like one too, you realize as you glance in the mirror with a cringe. You quickly proofread the paper and submit it so you can sleep before your 8:30, all while telling yourself this will never happen again. But deep down you know that it will.
1) You live in the magical world of "tomorrow".
"Have you started the essay?" "No, but I'm going to do it tomorrow."
But when you say tomorrow you do not, in fact mean in 24 hours. No, that would be too easy. You mean that you'll do it the last possible second that you can manage.
2) You tell yourself that you work best under pressure.
When your friends ask you why you waited so long to complete an assignment, you'll just reply that you get your best work done under pressure. But this is a lie. The reason why you waited so long was because you were too busy finding other things to do to avoid responsibilities.
3) An easy task takes way longer than it should be.
4) You find yourself doing things that you hate just to avoid your work.
Hate talking in front of crowds but have an assignment due tomorrow? That flyer for the spring play auditions will suddenly look way more appealing, let me tell you.
5) Always making a promise to yourself that you will change your ways.
"I will never do this to myself again!" You say in your head over and over. But you and I both know that this is a lie. You will do this again, and you know it. *sighs* I tell myself this after I submit all my assignments a minute before they are due. I tell myself that I will start my next paper a month before it is due. And then suddenly it is due tomorrow. And I know deep inside that things will never change.
