5 Things Every Person Should Know

Each person has his own skill set. Whether it be working with your hands, playing music, or any other skill, everyone has one. But there are some skills that are, or should be, universal. Skills that every person should know, no matter what they do for a living or where they live. The following list contains some of the many things every person should know.

  1. How to change a tire. Tires go flat. It’s a fact of owning a car. Even if you don’t own a car, it’s a good skill to have. All the tools you’d need should come in the car. Yes, that’s including the spare tire. You never know when it’s going to happen, but when it does, do you really want to wait for someone to come and help? What if you’re in a situation where you really can’t wait? Changing a tire isn’t hard, and it’s something that everyone should know.
  2. How to cook. Knowing how to cook is not just a skill, it’s a necessity. You have to eat to live. However, it is a skill that everyone should know. At one point or another, you will live on your own. It may be with someone else, it may not be. Either way, you should know how to cook. Any person can boil chicken. The skill is adding enough seasonings and spices to make it taste better. The skill is complimenting certain foods with each other.
  3. How to sew. Knowing how to sew is a skill that you don’t use all the time, but when you do, it’s a lifesaver. It can save that shirt you love, or it can even be used to create something for somebody. This skill also branches out to crocheting. Knowing how to crochet cannot only be a good skill to have, but a way to help relieve some stress. It helps to get your mind off things, and it works to create useful things like scarves and blankets.
  4. How to raise a plant. If you can raise a plant, you can be responsible. When you raise a plant, you are literally sustaining another life. Being able to plant is one of the oldest skills, because it was one of the only ways to get food a few hundred years ago. Being able to raise a plant can also lead to growing a vegetable garden, which is not only a great skill, but it also ties in with number two. Cooking your own food is one thing. Cooking the food that you grew is a totally different thing and makes you feel so much better.
  5. How to speak. I know, it sounds silly. Who doesn’t know how to speak? A lot of people can talk, but not everybody can speak. Speaking is not just blurting things out that sound like words. It is properly using grammar and articulating correctly. A lot of times, this can be fixed by just going to school, unless there is a problem with the school. Speaking is one of the other skills that isn’t just a skill, but a necessity.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
