5 Things You Should Do When Finding The Perfect Big

Recruitment is finally over and now you are considered a sister! Congrats, you found your home, your people, and whether you know it or not, your best friends for life. Every sorority has a different process on how a new member gets a big and how an initiated member gets a little sister. Getting a big sister is one of the best parts about being in a "srat". They are your mentor, friend, a shoulder to cry on, and most importantly, they care. There are a few things I suggest when hanging out with temporary bigs and seeing which one is the perfect match for you.

1. Give every temporary big a chance

Yes, you could love your bid day buddy soooo much and want them to be your big in the worst way, but don't rule out all the other girls who want to get to know you even if you don't become a big/little duo.

2. Do fun things with your potential bigs

Yes, going out is fun and partying with your big seems ideal, but treat hanging with these older girls as dating. Do fun and different activities such as: going for ice cream, grabbing dinner, even going bowling just to get to know them better.

3. Make sure your big is going to push you in the right direction

A big sister is suppose to guide you down the right path as you grow so you want to make sure they'll help you in tough situations. Whether you are having boy problems or struggling in a class, your big should be able to listen to you and give you guidance.

4. Ask questions

Yes, recruitment is over and you thought the whole "getting to know you" phase was over, but really it is just beginning. When talking to your temp bigs, you should ask them more personal questions about themselves and how they enjoy being in the sorority. The best connections are when you and your future big can talk about anything and everything. You should be able to laugh, cry, make jokes, and feel comfortable around each other. You should feel like you've known them your whole life.

5. Trust the process

If you trust in the process, everything will workout. There is no such thing as a "bad" big. Remember, you are the new member class and everyone is so excited to meet you guys. If you trust the process like you did during recruitment you will find someone who makes you the best version of yourself.

Every big/little duo is meant to be and they love you so much already even if they don't know you. Bigs are the best and joining a whole family is even better.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
