The transition from college into the real world isn't an easy one. It's been hard for me not to write endless articles on how much I miss my old life, my old friends, and my old easy-going schedule. It is a bit of shock transitioning into a life of responsibilities and deadlines. There is always something to worry about, always something to do, and never quite enough time. But once you get past the obvious setbacks of growing up, there are also a ton of things to look forward to.
1. Apartment hunting
After years of watching fixer-upper episodes, and pinning things on Pinterest, you can finally create a space of your own. You don't have to ask your parents if it's cool to put that half naked picture of Liam Hemsworth on the wall, or try to handle your candles from the RA at school. You have a place that is entirely your own creation, and a representation of who you truly are. I am so ready to get my DIY on.
2. Cooking
This was always a negative for me when I thought of growing up. I love when my parents, or my roommates, made me food. I'm not good at cooking, and learning how to cook always seemed a hassle to me. But since being on my own, I actually love to learn what I like to eat, and really cook for my own needs. I can go on a health kick if I want, or eat spaghetti for a week. Plus, I've discovered I'm actually like the queen of herbs. Hell's Kitchen here I come.
3. Having Friends Over
In high school or even in college I loved having friends over, but there were always variables to worry about. In high school you had to worry about your parents, and their rules. Everyone remembers the inevitable moment when one of you parents comes upstairs, eyes bloodshot, to tell you to shut up and go to bed. In college you always had to worry about what roommate had an exam the next day, stopping you from a true rager. Sure, at your new place you'll have neighbors, but hopefully you'll be blessed with some thick walls so you can have some free and fun celebrations of your adulthood.
4. Pets
Who doesn't want a dog, or a cat, or just a little being to cuddle and play with all the time? I was one of those kids that was never allowed a pet, and once we finally got one, my parents were the ones that chose for me. Now that you're an adult, you get to make your own choices when it comes to your furry friends. Screw kids, pets for life dude!
Also, I will be the girl with a pet Instagram. Prayers my future pets will become famous so mama doesn't have to work.
5. Making it on your own
This aspect of adult living is often a double-edged sword. No one likes making the jump from depending on others to relying on themselves. It's terrifying. Once you get a job though, it is the logical next step.
Yes, it was like falling off a cliff at first, but after a while it becomes satisfying. I made this money, I bought these things, and I can make it on my own. YGG (You go, grad!).
