As a female, your mother is undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in your life, for better or for worse. If you're lucky enough to have a mother who has influenced your life for the better, then you know your relationship with her is a one-of-a-kind experience that no one outside of it will ever truly understand. The mother/daughter relationship -- especially for young, single mothers -- is a complex, unique, and mysterious endeavor. But if you're lucky enough to experience your mom as not only your guiding maternal figure, but as a best friend as well, you might come to find the following five items to be true. Here are the five best parts of having a "cool" mom. No mom jeans here!
1. No topic is off-limits.
Having a tight-knit relationship with your mom is a blessing as much as it happens to be a curse. If your mom just so happens to be your best friend, no topic is off-limits, and you can basically talk to her about anything and everything. The beauty of this is that no matter how poor of a decision you've made or how badly you've screwed up, she's going to love you anyway. The curse is that as your mother -- and friend -- it is her duty to ensure that you acknowledge your screw-up and move forward with resilience and grace -- just like she taught you.
2. Sharing clothes.
Another double-edged sword, if you're lucky enough to have a mom hardly twice your age with impeccable taste. Sharing clothes is a definite plus. Shopping is double the fun -- until you pick out the same jacket and duel to the death over who gets it. The beauty of this is that as her daughter, you're always going to win. This is her moral obligation as your mother, and at the end of the day, no one is going to complain over double the closet inventory.
3. Her friends are your friends.
Having a mom who is young, "hip," and also happens to be your best friend, insinuates that her friends are your friends, and, more often than not, vice versa. Her friends enjoy your idealistic, vibrant youth, while you get the moral wisdom and sneak peek into adulthood from being around them. My mom and her friends have reassured me that there is indeed a life after college.
4. She understands your problems, because she's been through them -- and she gives the best advice because of it.
Whether your mom is half or twice your age, there is no better person to talk to than someone who has been through a universal experience. Breakups, friend fights, failed exams -- your mom can empathize with you, whether she's gone through these things a mere decade ago or 30 years ago. She'll give the best advice, because she's been through it and knows exactly how not to handle certain situations, which means she'll show you exactly how to come out on top of anything.
5. She's your person.
Having your mom as your person is undoubtedly the best part of having a "cool" mom, as opposed to a regular mom. Your relationship might be unconventional, misunderstood, and hard to explain at times, but there is no one else you'd rather have on your team at the end of the day. The best part is, no matter what, you two are stuck together forever. Sorry, mom.
