At the end of the school year we all like to talk about whether or not we're going "home" for the summer, but shouldn't we be asking each other whether or not we're "leaving home?" For a lot of college students, home does not necessarily mean "hometown."
Here are five signs that your college is actually your home.
1. Leaving makes you sad.
Remember the first time you left home to start your first year as a college student? Leaving was exciting, but you also couldn't imagine starting over, making new friends, and being away from the place that you live in for such a long time. Now everything is the other way around! You're starting to wonder how you're going to spend months away from your good friends and your current life.
2. Packing up your room is the worst.
At the end of every school year, moving out your dorm, apartment, or house can be a nightmare. While you've been attending school, you have accumulated everything that you need to survive. Chances are most of the clothes you wear are already with you and many people already have their own furniture. When all of your stuff is in one place and you dread moving it all in and out, you know that you have found a home.
3. Going home feels like a vacation.
When we were younger and living at home, going on a vacation meant escaping home and relaxing in another place. As college students, our hometown visits are to do exactly that. We're only going back as a temporary break of our real lives.
4. You know that you'll want to come back home soon.
Being at home away from all the papers and exams is great, and seeing family and old friends is even better, but many college students know that after a little while they will want nothing more than to return to school. Being on vacation is nice, but no one wants to be detached from their normal lives for too long.
5. You start to panic when you realize that you don't have as much time as you thought you did freshman year.
Freshman year, it feels like you have forever to enjoy your college experience and accomplish great things before getting a job and becoming a member of the rest of the world. Unfortunately, every year that passes becomes another year closer to having to leave home and start over. You know that your college has become your home when you don't want to leave.
