As college students across the nation pick up shreds of dignity from kale chip Instagrams posted six months ago, we turn to the newest culinary trend sweeping the nation: acai bowls.
For those of you who don’t know what acai bowls are, download Instagram. The bowls are filled with an acai puree and bright fruity toppings in order to fool the body into thinking that acai actually tastes good. The kicker: acai bowls are full of antioxidants! None of us know what antioxidants are, but boy, are we excited about them. It's also recently been classified as a super food, which basically means it burns all of the calories from the four slices of pizza you'll consume for dinner. I will say, however, that it’s surprisingly refreshing to see the nation’s newest trend on Instagram. Months ago, my Instagram could be summarized by the phrase “two girls posing." Now, every fifth post on Instagram is a picture of an acai bowl. This change is hopefully here to stay because nothing piques my interest quite like looking at someone’s mediocre lunch for three seconds.
When it comes to Instagram, I truly believe everyone has the right to post anything they want. But since the acai berry was only recently brought into mainstream American culture, I think it’s important to investigate this topic further in order to create a universal understanding of just how little people care about what you ate for lunch.
Acai bowls (or pictures of acai bowls, I suppose) can be divided into five categories, and I'll list those categories for those of you who are dying to know more about America's favorite lunch. So, if your next picture of an acai bowl falls into one of these categories (or even if it doesn't), it might be time to reconsider how you're spending your free time.1. Acai bowls next to a plant
2. Acai bowls with your significant other
3. Acai bowls on a wooden table
4. Acai bowls with your sorority sisters
5. Acai bowls on the beach
At the end of the day, we all know that the pinnacle of health is ignoring every single food group except for fruit. It's a scientific fact that a healthy life starts with a healthy, Instagram-worthy lunch. And since fruit is loaded with natural sugar, consuming it next to nature should eliminate any adverse health effects that you could possibly attain from sugar. So, let the pictures of acai bowls flood my Instagram as I uninstall the app and await the next "health" trend that will ultimately leave me asking: "Has everyone I know heard about the turkey sandwich I ate for lunch today?"
