5 Reminders Every College Student Needs To Hear This Semester

A new semester is on the horizon. If you're like me, you get an excited feeling each time a new semester begins. Instead of seeing each new semester as one step closer to graduation, I see each one as a new beginning. A new semester can be a time where a person starts over with a clean slate and makes changes, such as new goals or a better outlook on where you're going in life.

With half of another school year in the books, bucket lists start getting formed by college students everywhere. Whether you're a second-semester freshman or you're preparing to make that much-earned walk across the stage towards your diploma, the competition of another school year is a big deal. As the final 16 weeks of this school year begin, here are a few simple reminders to keep in the back of your mind to make this semester the best one yet.

Be adventurous.

These four years are a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and taking chances are pivotal in getting as much out of it as you can. Remind yourself to step outside your comfort zone every now and then. Speaking from experience, it might surprise you how much you learn about yourself from doing so.

Keep your head up during tough times.

Life knocks you down sometimes, but when it does, remind yourself that everything happens for a reason and you'll come out of the situation much stronger than you were before.

Lean on others around you.

If you come across stressful or upsetting moments this semester, don't forget to lean on your friends for their support. We are all overwhelmed at one point during the semester, so chances are that one of your friends has gone through a similar situation.

Treat yo self.

This phrase is often taken lightly, but in this sense it's not. Take time to reward yourself for working as hard as you do. The week after that big test deserves a night out to blow off some steam. An awesome week at the gym deserves a cheat day. Treating yourself with small incentives is never a bad thing when it's well deserved.

Do what makes you happy.

Do what you love, love what you do. It's as simple as that. If you enjoy what you're doing, then you will likely be much more passionate about it.

Many aspects of a semester make it what it is. Grades, a social life, and extracurricular activities all come into play. As this semester passes by, remind yourself of these five things from time to time. Most importantly, take this semester and run with it. After all, these years will fly by before we know it.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
