Everyone has seen all the advertisements for Disney's newest film "Zootopia." Their clever ads mimic modern films including the Academy Award nominees and their changing of titles to fit the animal world has definitely caught everyone's attention. I went and saw this movie last night, and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. This film gave me many reasons to go back and see it that I had to share some of those reasons with the world.
1. It's a fun family film.
In true Disney fashion, this film is enjoyable for everyone in the family. There were jokes for the kids and there were also a lot of jokes catered towards the adults. As a 20-year-old I enjoyed every joke that catered to me and every joke that was not! The film is funny, light and an enjoyable adventure for those of all ages.
2. It has great, well-rounded characters.
The writers definitely were not lazy during the making of this film. The two main characters, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, are given ample back story and motivation for their actions. They both also learn a lot from the events of the film. However, that is not where the amazing characterization stops. Every secondary character is as well rounded, although not to the extent of the two main characters. Every animal in this movie was given the chance to shine.
3. Outstanding animation.
Much like the writers, the animators did not slack off during production and you can tell in the film. Each scene has beautifully animated backgrounds and characters. Between all of the species of animals, you can even tell the difference in their fur textures. The artists who worked on this film clearly had a lot of talent and much to give to this film, which truly showed in the final product.
4. An amazing message.
The message of the film revolves around racism, sexism and prejudices in any form. It is amazing that a children's film hit upon each of those topics in such a great way that would get through to children and adults alike. The idea that in "Zootopia" any bunny can be anything they dream no matter their species is an amazing lesson for children in today's modern world to learn.
5. It's relevant.
The creators of this film started production years ago. Therefore, they could never have known the tension and issues with racism and sexism we were going to be having in this country in the past few years. It is amazing to me just how relevant this film is to exactly what is going on in the world right now, especially in our very own country.
"Zootopia" was a thoroughly enjoyable family film with an amazing lesson behind it. Its relevance and value is unmatched in my opinion by many children's films I've seen in the past year, and I am a Disney fanatic. Zootopia brings Disney movies to an entirely new level and sets the bar high for all of the children's films set to come out in 2016.
