While being at college, it’s easy to lose touch with your friends. You function on different schedules, your breaks may not match up, you may not even live in the same state anymore. Half of the year, my best friends and I live ten minutes from one another; the other half we’re hours away. Lucky for me, I have the most amazing friends. They make it easy to stay close. We can go days without texting, hell, even weeks if I’m being honest. The beauty of having long distance best friends is that being apart for six months brings us closer together. Here are the five best things about having long distance best friends.
1. Random tags
These friends are the ones that will randomly tag you in any Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook post that reminds them of you. These are the type of notifications that you get and they instantly put you in a good mood. You know they saw the post and couldn’t resist sharing it with the hope of putting a smile on your face.
2. Unexpected texts
Similar to the random tags, these are the unexpected ‘love you,’ ‘miss you,’ and ‘two weeks 'til we’re reunited!’ texts that always seem to come when you’re having the worst day possible. Your spirits are instantly lifted knowing they took time out of their busy days to let you know you crossed their mind.
3. Reunions
Something about going four months without seeing your best friends, and then running into their arms is one of the most rewarding feelings. Also, being able to hangout and pickup exactly where you left off is special bond that can never be broken.
4. Different Perspective
Since your long distance best friends all go to different schools and they have a completely different perspective on whatever crisis hit you that week. They’re the ones you turn to when you need an unbiased pair of eyes to give you some much needed advice.
5. Taste of Home
Sitting in your room crying because you're just that homesick, your long distance BFFs are the ones you call. They’re the ones that will Facetime you for hours and remind you that home isn’t a place, it’s a state of mind. They’re the ones that make you laugh until I cry and give you the taste of home that you craved.
Although being long distance best friends for six months out of the year seems horrendous, through some introspection I realized how lucky I am to have these friendships. Love you all and only eleven more weeks until we’re reunited once again!
