It's around that time of the year- midterms. Midterms are the worst, especially when it's 70 degrees outside, spring break is next week and you are completely checked out. This combination of factors can make you 100 times more likely to freak out about something completely avoidable. I know, it's human nature to worry but there are some things that just don't deserve that kind of attention. There are tons of reasons why you shouldn't stress about the small stuff and here is just a few-
1. Stress can cause health issues.
First, and most obviously, stress is just plain bad for you. High blood pressure, stiff neck, all sorts of issues can arise out of the simple act of you caring about something. I mean, I’m not saying to reject all responsibility and drop out of college but hey, maybe not give yourself more problems by stressing over missing one day of class. *insert shrugging girl emoji*
2. It’s probably something small.
What are you stressed about? The one thing I’ve learned in all my years in college is to pick my stress wisely. You got one bad quiz grade, so what? You can still make up for it. It’s not a big deal and it is definitely not worth losing your head over.
3. It probably does not affect the bigger picture.
The No. 1 reason people stress the small stuff is because they lose sight of the big picture. The little things that naturally go wrong in your everyday life are not things that will catastrophically change your future. As long as you keep your bigger picture and long term goals in mind, the small stuff is nothing to fret over.
4. You’re young.
I know this is such an oversaid statement, and sometimes we don’t feel so young (especially when we are applying to graduate), but this is not the end of our journey. Everyone tells you what you do in college will affect the rest of your life because your degree determines what kind of job you get and that determines what kind of life you will have (theoretically). But, if we’re being honest, your first job out of school probably won’t be your last and these four years surely cannot determine the rest of your life, or at least I hope it doesn’t because a lot of us would really be out of luck.
5. Things change.
In our lives things change so quickly and suddenly that some of the stuff we think we care about won’t even matter at the end of the metaphorical day.
All in all, don’t sweat the small stuff, as cliché as that sounds. As important as it seems now, it won’t drastically change the course of your life. There is no way to know what our futures hold, so just take it day by day. You’ll feel a lot better if you don’t stress yourself with every little detail of your life. Stick to your long term goals and be wary that there will be small alterations but you can still achieve what you set your mind to. Don’t let those little bumps in the road keep you too far behind.
