A lot of college kids opt to take on part-time jobs in retail/sales to make some extra cash on the side. While making a little cash is awesome, our jobs can sometimes drive us crazy. Here are five things that everyone who has worked in retail at least once in their lives can relate to.
1. Penny-pinching customers
Now, I'm a girl who's all about saving a buck but sometimes the desperation of customers is insane. No, just because this item's barcode is scratched off does not make it free and, no, I do not have coupons. But, yes, there is tax.
2. Customers think that you're corporate
You get blamed for everything that the customer personally thinks is wrong within the company. Ma'am, I'm just here so I won't get fined. Customers sometimes mistake employees/sales associates for executives responsible for company policies that you have had no part in making. I don't make the policies. I'm just doing my job. Take it up with someone who can actually do something about it.
3. The pay sucks
Fellow retail workers, I think we can all agree that we just don't get paid enough for all that we have to endure. Working with the public is hard and it takes a strong person to withstand it every day. Anybody for starting a petition to raising our wage to $15?!
4. People look down on you because you work retail
Yes, I work here. But you can't talk to me like I am not a person. I have a life just as you do too. I'm doing what I have to do.
5. Customers do try you
We all have had those customers whose life purpose is to try and get a rise out of associates. You know, the ones who purposely destroy the store because they know you're going to have to clean it out. Having to restrain yourself from going off is the ultimate test of one's patience.
