For as long as I can remember, there has been a certain stigma about Greek Life among those who aren’t involved. I’ve been a part of my sorority for about 4 months, and in that short time, I’ve had numerous people ask me, “Why do you feel like you have to pay for your friends?” as well as, “So do you guys just get drunk all the time?” In an effort to debunk some of these misconceptions about Greek Life, here are 5 reasons I decided to join a Greek organization.
The Sisterhood
I grew up without any sisters and without any girls close to my age in my family. The idea of a group of women to be there for me and be my sisters was the main reason I decided I was going to rush, and I kept this quality in mind when trying to narrow down my selections.
Giving Back
One thing that’s very important to Greek organizations is their philanthropy, which many people don’t see. Each organization has one, and mine in particular is close to my heart. I enjoy giving back to the community and being able to do that with my sisters is really an awesome experience.
Leadership
There are many opportunities in Greek organizations to be active and involved. Leadership not only looks good on a resume, but it also helps you develop important skills for future career endeavors. Plus, all of your sisters really want you to succeed and will help you be the greatest you that you can be.
Academics
A common misconception is that Greek organizations distract from school, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Each organization has specific GPA requirements to remain in good standing, and some plan study sessions. Others offer prizes for good grades. Plus, if you’re struggling, a lot of organizations will help you find a sister that has the same major, which is helpful when picking classes and studying.
Community
At my university, no matter what Greek organization you’re in, the camaraderie between organizations is strong. We help each other achieve goals and raise money for different philanthropies. People have friends in their organizations and in others, too. We all share a bond that those outside of Greek Life don’t always understand.
I recommend Greek Life to anyone who asks. It’s so much more than cute clothes and parties. It’s an experience that I wouldn’t trade, and I would do it all over again if given the chance. It’s only my first year, and I’ve already met people and had experiences I will remember for a long time. I can’t wait for the next 4 years to see what’s to come.
