You’ve probably watched a thousand basic sorority-girl movies throughout your lifetime, giving you a negative idea of what Greek life is actually like. Being a member of a Greek organization, I’m here to give you my top five reasons (only five because there is a word limit) as to why you should be a bit more open minded and possibly reconsider going Greek:
1. Academics
Academics is and will continue to be my priority throughout my collegiate years. So I needed to know, what exactly could Greek life do for me? My sorority has provided me with an academic support network. With a wide range of Greek students across campus, I’ve had access to all kinds of knowledge about classes, departments, and professors. It’s your number-one resource for tutoring and academic help and advice, and according to statistics, college graduation rates are 20 higher among Greeks than non-Greeks.
2. Philanthropy
I don’t know about you, but giving back is one of the most selfless and fulfilling feelings for me. Lending a helping hand to those less fortunate was a socially conscious reason for me to join a sorority. Plus, did you know that Greek life accounts for about 75 percent of all total college and university donations? Pretty rewarding, if you ask me.
3. Networking
When you go Greek, you are becoming a part of a huge and widespread network. There are numerous leadership opportunities within your chapter, as well as outside. Thanks to my organization, I was given the opportunity to write for The Odyssey and am able to share this story with you. You will also be given the opportunity to meet other organizations that will help and open plenty of doors —opportunities you'll have long after your college years.
4. Personal Development
Personal development is one of the top reasons why I went Greek to begin with. I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself. I was a walking oxymoron being a shy, reserved journalism major. But my organization was able to enrich my communication skills and help me come out of my comfort zone. With Greek life, there is an expectation of social interaction and personal growth.
5. Sisterhood
Last but most certainly not least, sisterhood. Let’s be real, what most attracts you to sorority life is the thought of having 100+ sisters to share laughs, memories, clothes, and to have an army behind you when your boyfriend dumps you. A sorority offers a sense of identity and belonging; a home away from home. They emphasize loyalty to and among the sisterhood and offer lifelong friendships through common goals and shared experiences.
So let go of that sorority-girl stereotype and give Greek life a chance. It is nothing like you see in the movies, and if people ask why you’d want to “pay for your friends,” I can assure you that you will not be paying enough.
