Nobody ever likes to admit it, but moms are right a lot of the time. Whether they're offering us advice, telling us what to wear, or getting angry at us for not wearing sunscreen, our moms love us, and really, we should thank them for dealing with us for years.
So Mom, thank you for the billion things you do, but here are five that I've recently learned to appreciate:
1. Thank you for making me wear a jacket.
Even though I complained, yelled, and said that not only would I not wear the jacket, but I would then make you hold it, thank you for making me bring it. Not only did I need it, I cherished it on those cold outings.
2. Thank you for listening to my boy problems.
Thank you for listening when I thought that my heart was broken and would never be repaired. Thank you for being there when he didn't show up. Thank you for being there four days later when I was in love again. And then four days after that when I wasn't.
3. Thank you for making me clean the house.
Being forced to do the dishes, clean the counters, and who knows what else came in handy big-time while living in a dorm. I knew how to clean up the crumbs (not because I actually cleaned them at home, but because I got chastised every time I didn't), wipe down the counters, and generally be a clean person.
4. Thank you for sending me care packages.
I love getting care packages when I'm away at school. How do I know I love getting packages? My mom sends them to me. On Halloween, Valentine's Day, or whenever else, I get a package slip in my school mailbox, and my mom is the only one to remember to do it.
5. Thank you for not strangling me every day.
I think I leave behind crumbs every day. I forget to change the toilet paper every time. The dogs always dig a hole when I'm supposed to be watching them. I play my music too loud when it's time to sleep, and I leave my pan on the stove for three days. Somehow, I don't know how, my mother hasn't killed me yet.
