We’ve all seen the posters boasting about our school’s great study abroad programs naming places like London, Spain, France, and more. These opportunities sound like fun, but a lot of student still hesitate to sign up. Maybe it seems like too much work to apply, or it seems unlikely that you can fit time abroad into the busy schedule that is your major, especially if you’re going into engineering or business. However, almost anyone can go abroad and if you really want to go you can make it happen. Why should you want to go? Well here a few reasons why the experience will pay off.
1. If you’re learning a new language, you’ll be able to truly test your abilities
As someone who’s currently learning German I eagerly await the chance to try out my skills. Immersing oneself in another culture is the best way to learn the language because you have no choice. If you want to eat, find the bathroom, or make it to your destination you’ll have to find a way to convey your message. The struggle for survival is an invaluable teacher.
2. Experience new cultures
Goodbye hamburgers, hello kielbasa. In another country you will be able to sample different foods, learn other traditions, and encounter a new way of life. This will give you a new perspective on your own life and help you become more informed about the world around you.
3. Exhibit independence and self-reliance
In a new environment, where you may or may not speak the language, your ability to fend for yourself will definitely be put to the test. From reading maps and taking public transportation, to learning how to say bathroom in the native language, there are endless trials to prove yourself worthy. Though this may be a little daunting, every success will undoubtedly feel like a major accomplishment.
4. You likely won’t get another opportunity like thisNever again will you be this young and unencumbered. Travelling before taking on the responsibilities of children, houses, full time jobs, and so on is a smart move. When else would you be able to travel through Europe living in youth hostels? Take advantage of the freedom that comes with being old enough to explore, but young enough to be free.
5. Make lifelong memories
You’ll never forget the time you spend abroad. Each day will be atypical and therefore, memorable. Memories of adventures with newfound friends will be something you can cherish long after you return home.
