We are the generation of technology. We are millennials, the generation that has grown alongside technology, watching as each device has been out-competed by the next. We have observed technological advancements that were thought impossible 100 years ago. As technology progresses, however, our ability to socialize and live life fully seems to deteriorate. We need to find a way to blend the two together better, and we need to know when to put one away for the other.
1. When you're out for lunch, be merry and eat!
You don't need to take a picture of every piece of food and glass of whatever you've ordered. Concentrate on what is in front of you, enjoy the experience that is your juicy, smokey hamburger or that sour yet sweet iced lemonade. You'll enjoy it just as much if not more by giving it your full attention and indulging in the present.
2. When you're with friends to socialize, actually socialize.
It's really no fun for everyone to get together to simply stare at their own phones. Where did 'Never Have I Ever' go, where did the planning of adventures run off to? Instead of isolating yourself with your phone, put it away and talk. Plan that dinner date, that road trip, that concert or trip to an amusement park. Talk about each other's likes and dislikes, goals, and simply silly, stupid things!
3. Go out and do something with your friends!
There's an entire world out there for you to explore. Oceans, mountains, forests and communities of people just waiting to be seen, experienced and loved. Go fall in love with a mountain you and your friends will never forget. Go spend a day at the beach soaking up the rays of the sun, not the glow of your phone.
4. Experience nature, don't simply document it.
Nature is there for you to experience and enjoy. If you see a dolphin, a shark or a butterfly, there is no need for you to disrespect it in the name of a selfie. That part of nature won't last forever, and neither will that picture (most likely), so don't document it, live it. Be a part of nature, not separate from it. I promise nature isn't that bad!
5. Give yourself some alone time to do anything!
Turn off the notifications for an hour and read a book, paint a painting, take a hike, learn to play guitar or go to the gym. There are a million things you can do offline. That DIY pallet bench, planting that garden, something that keeps your hands and mind working hard with as much 'fun' (actually more fun) than the Internet holds.
Don't isolate yourself from the world, it's rich communities of people, animals, and unforgettable sights. Instead, immerse yourself in it and enjoy life, don't simply document it and move on. That's how you miss the reality in front of you for the fantasy technology invites.
