When you think of being a geek, you might think of sad high-school aged boys who don't have any semblance of social skills and can't get a date to save their lives.
Being into something like Dungeons and Dragons or adoring something as "juvenile" as video games might seem sad, but in reality, being a geek is one of the best things you can be.
Here are five reasons why it's great to be a geek!
1. Being geeky brings lots of passion.
What other type of person could get so hyped about skins from a gaming event being leaked or about an overture from a musical? None that I can think of. People might not understand just why we love the things we love so much, but that doesn't matter--we have lots of passion, lots of opinions, and so much drive that we can do incredible things.
2. Speaking of doing incredible things, geeks are some of the most talented people imaginable.
When you love something as much as geeks love their fandoms, that passion can help you do awesome things. Some incredibly talented artists post beautiful fanart of their favorite anime or video game, the product of years upon years of practice.
Fanfiction might seem like a sad pursuit to some, but some fanfic writers have more beautiful prose than some published authors. People who roleplay have some of the best imaginations--some homebrewed Dungeons and Dragons campaigns feature intricate universes with some of the most compelling story you'll ever find.
Have you fallen in love with a song from a musical or a video game? No worries, a group of geeks has created orchestral scores, arrangements, and covers by talented musicians and singers.
Cosplayers create intricate, wonderful costumes that are so accurate it's scary, and comic book artists are able to capture an incredible story in just a few panels.
We might love something that people consider dumb, but no one can deny the beauty that comes out of that love.
3. We always have something new to love
Being a geek? Never boring!
There are a million different fandoms to love, and within those fandoms billions of wonderful things to enjoy created by other people and infinite other things to potentially create.
Because these people are so passionate and so talented, there's always another world to jump into. There's always a new book to read, a new show to watch, a new video game to play.
When you're a geek, you can't be bored!
4. Geeks are used to facing rejection and striving in spite of it.
Plenty of people who are considered "geeky" have similar stories--people discredit their passions or tell them that their passions only work for a certain demographic.
Women are told that they're "too girly" for Star Trek or comics, people assume that all Asian people like anime, or people assume that if someone doesn't "look like a geek," they automatically are not one. But despite this, geeks love what they love without apology, without compromise.
When some people in the geek community isn't supportive, the rest of the community will help out without a thought. For all the people who are told that they don't look like they love what they love, you are wonderful--keep doing what you're doing.
For people who are mocked because of what they love, ignore the haters--people will think what they think. They just can't understand how incredible you are.
5. Best of all, being a geek will bring you some of the best friends in all existence.
My best friends of all time, the ones who have stuck with me through the years and will stick with me through many more, are the ones who are geeks too.
The best friend I've met in college became my best friend because he posted about Dungeons and Dragons on his Snapchat story.
We've bonded over him inundating me with anime recommendations and me inundating him with new musicals to get just a little bit too obsessed with. Some of my favorite memories with my high school friends include us blasting songs from the Hamilton soundtrack in my car at lunch or screaming during intense Overwatch matches.
The group who got me to overcome my anxiety to go to prom had a "day date" full of geeky fun that helped ease me into doing something that scared me. They've created worlds with me, imagined for hours on end, and stuck with me through all my obsessions.
Sure, our hobbies might not be "cool," but you meet some of the most loyal, incredible people through them.
Because when someone can stick with you after they've watched you roll three nat ones in a row, or after they've heard you belt songs from your favorite musical off key, that person will be with you pretty much forever.
And you wouldn't have it any other way.
