5 Reasons You Should Adopt A Shelter Dog

Let's be real for a minute. Do you actually need convincing that a dog would make a great addition to your household? Probably not. But on the off chance that you aren't immediately and wholeheartedly on-board with the notion of adopting a cuddly companion, here are five reasons why you definitely should.

1. It's good for your emotional well-being.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, “Caring for a companion animal can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment and lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation in all age groups.” We as humans are social creatures and having a constant friend by our side can contribute to long term happiness. Just the thought of puppy kisses can bring a smile to even the grumpiest face!

2. It's good for your psychological well-being.

Evidence has been around for about 30 years that petting dogs reduces stress and improves mood, due to higher levels of dopamine being released in the brain. On average, dog owners tend to be happier and more content. Bring the snuggle-bugs over here!

3. It's good for your physical well-being.

The American Heart Association found that dog owners had lower blood pressure and resting heart rates than non-dog owners of the same BMI ( body mass index). Daniel DeNoon, executive editor of ‘Harvard Heart Letter’ says that, “The evidence reviewed by the AHA indicates that dog owners are more likely to exercise, have a better cholesterol profile, have lower blood pressure, be less vulnerable to the physical effects of stress, and be more likely to survive a heart attack.” Walking for just 30 minutes a day can help improve your overall health, so get out there with your new dog and move it, move it.

4. It saves a life.

Each year, of the 3.7 millions animals that enter shelters, more than 1.2 million of them are euthanized. By adopting a shelter dog you will save a life, and open up a spot for another dog to be given the chance to find a new home. 44% of American households have a pet dog, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says this number continues to grow each year. If that upward trend continues, we may eventually see an end to the homeless pet problem!

5. You'll have a best friend for life.

People will come and go from your life, but your dog will always be there. It's till death do you part, except with more belly rubs, sloppy kisses, and undying adoration. Plus, the occasional chewed up shoe, but you'll forgive them for it.

There are countless more reasons why a dog would make your life better, but listing every one of them would take all day. So be content with these five, and go adopt a fur baby!
