As a young girl, I was never a fan of distance running. Growing up, cross country was at the absolute bottom of my list of activities and running "the mile" in eighth grade gym class was a daunting task.
Even in college when I began to run on a semi-regular basis (and I use that term very loosely) it was only as an attempt to "get fit" or "stay active" and not once can I say that I found it enjoyable. I simply did not understand this obsession that some people had with the sport.
It wasn't until this spring when I registered and trained for the Crazylegs Classic in Madison, WI (thanks to the fam) that I realized, I don't hate to run. In fact, I kind of love it. On April 30, I sprinted across the finish line on the 50th yard line of Camp Randall Stadium with hundreds of fellow runners, music blasting and adrenaline pumping through my veins. And at that moment, it happened; I caught the running bug.
And let me just tell you from personal experience that you do not need to be a certain age or physique to be a runner. I ran alongside young and old, big and small, a little old lady with a sign on her back that read, "How did I get so slow? Oh yeah…I got old" - yes, I was behind her at one point, that sure kicked my butt into gear, and even a man running in a full firefighter uniform, helmet and all. No joke.
Especially nowadays with such a wide spectrum of races out there, from marathons to mud runs, to a local race for a cause to a nationwide color run, you're sure to find a course that's just right for you. Even cooler, most races are for a great cause and the proceeds raised are donated to that charity or event, so not only are you doing it for YOU, but you're helping someone else out along the way. Way cool!
For those of us who live in the Midwest, we are lucky to live in the home of some of America's greatest race courses. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or brand new in the crazy world of running like I am, here are five unique races you should totally check out in Minnesota and Wisconsin this summer.
Grandad Half Marathon - May 7
I am a bit bit biased given that I go to school in the beautiful city of La Crosse, WI, however this 13.1 mile run takes an absolutely beautiful course. It starts with breathtaking views of the Coulee Region atop the Grandad Bluff overlook. The course then descends almost 600 feet through the bluff forests on Bliss Road, winds through serene residential neighborhoods along the bluffs on La Crosse’s south side, and then follows the banks of the Mississippi River to the finish in historic downtown. And as a bonus? Receive a free beer upon completion of the race compliments of the local Pearl Street Brewery. Win-win.
Grandma's Marathon and Half Marathon - June, 18
One big race. One big year. Celebrate 40 years of motivation, inspiration and perspiration.
One of the most popular races in the Midwest, this year Grandma's is celebrating their 40th year. Since their initial race in 1977, Grandma’s Marathon has grown bigger than just a 26.2 mile race along the scenic North Shore of Minnesota. According to its founders, it is a moment where runners of all calibers come together to celebrate the vigor of the human spirit. Where the word “impossible” ceases to exist; a day where 8,500 people are your best-running buddy. So, tie up your laces and join them for the 40th year of memories, miles and human might.
Her Madison Half Marathon and 5k Run Walk - June 25
Her Madison wants to provide women with an all-encompassing race weekend retreat. They invite participants to register for the 5K or Half Marathon “Weekend Experience” which provides access into additional events throughout the weekend. Participants that register for the Weekend Experience will receive a wristband upon check-in at the Friday night party and have full access to all weekend events. Having fun with your girls on a Friday night and a beautiful yoga session to stretch you out for the race, how fun is that? If all of these events aren't quite your thing, then you can also register for just the 5K or Half Marathon “Bib” that will get you all the amenities of a well-organized race: expo and packet pick up, finisher’s medal, participant t-shirt and post-race party.
Tough Mudder Twin Cities - July 16 & 17
We are a tough mudder. There's a 5-12 mile (depending on if you're running the half or a full) of mud and obstacles built to test your mental grit, camaraderie and all-around physical fitness. Tough Mudder is a team-oriented challenge with no winner, no finisher medal, no clock to race against—just an ice cold beer and a few good scrapes from a day spent outside and free from everyday bullsh*t. Tough Mudder is for anyone who has ever followed their gut, tried to defy gravity, chosen “dare” over “truth,” taken risks, sought thrills, or is generally awesome at life. Turns out, it's all been training. We are made for this.
5 Miles. 14+ Obstacles
Tough Mudder Half Twin Cities Presented by Merrell boasts two massive lakes, winding wooded trails, and rolling open fields. They’re transforming this hunt club into a Tough Mudder territory.
Gopher to Badger Half Marathon and 5K - August 13
Get ready to represent your state in this epic 5k and half marathon showdown! These races start in Stillwater, Minnesota and finish in Hudson, Wisconsin shortly after crossing the I-94 bridge over Lake St. Croix. Runners will battle for the lead and the honor of bringing home the win for their state as they race over the river into Hudson, Wisconsin. Just like the long-standing rivalry between Minnesota and Wisconsin, this race has a strong history and has been taking place annually since 1997! Come for the spirit of friendly competition then stay for the food and festivities in the park.
Battle for the Border
The winner of the border battle is determined by adding up the first five finishers from Minnesota, Wisconsin and other states. The group with the lowest total is crowned champion and the top five runners from that state receive a special Final Stretch duffle bag. There will also be a State Spirit Award given to the participant who displays outstanding pride for their state, so be sure to wear your face paint, costumes, or anything that will display your state pride!
