As most New Englanders know, as the warmer months approach, a whole new world of day trip possibilities emerge. And for many, New York City is at the top of that list. The Big Apple is full of amazing little gems hidden around every corner, some highly popularized, others kept more secret. So, the next time you hit up the "concrete jungle where dreams are made of" (thanks, Alicia Keys), consider checking out these cool places:
1. Ice & Vice Ice Cream
This place is seriously cool for anyone into crazy dessert combinations. They describe themselves as "an experimental ice cream shop" and make flavors like "Movie Night" which is an ice cream combining buttered popcorn, toasted raisins and chocolate chips. Some might be intimidated by these extreme ice creams, but the shop should definitely be on some sort of bucket list.
2. Sprinkles Cupcake ATM
The idea of buying a freshly made cupcake with NO human contact is really exciting for people everywhere. This machine located on Lexington Avenue is drawing all kinds of attention, and of course, providing the prime Insta opportunity. There are only ten in the country, though, so the line will probably be considerable.
3. Hai Street Kitchen
There is one big reason to come to this place: the sushi burrito! Who wouldn't want to combine the two favorite ethnic food groups? This place started in Philly, added a food truck, and now has expanded to NYC!
4. Housing Works Bookstore Cafe
This place is as low-key as it gets: it's a bookstore and cafe/coffee shop all in one. It's two levels of books and seating areas, plus an extensive cafe. The best part is that it is a part of Housing Works, an organization that donates all proceeds to services for those affected by HIV and AIDS.
5. Gallow Green Rooftop Bar
This amazing bar is located at the top of the McKittrick Hotel (not a real hotel, by the way, but also a cool place) in Chelsea. It has a totally botanical feel; it is a true rooftop garden. Not to mention the amazing views of the city. It's like an escape from the big city in the big city.
So, next time you decide to take the metro-north to Grand Central, consider these metropolitan treasures.
