As a 20-year-old college student, having your mom or dad as a personal chauffeur is kind of embarrassing. Which is why I get dropped off 20 yards from the front door wherever I go. I just never had time to get my driver’s license in high school, and I don’t have much motivation to get it now.
But from my last four years of eligible driving time, I’ve learned there are a few perks of not having a license.
You don’t have to go through driver’s ed.
You can skip that whole “learning how to drive” process. You won’t be nagged behind the wheel, and you definitely won’t need to sit in the back seat while a nervous, inexperienced driver repeatedly slams on the brakes.
You can save money.
You may have to pitch in gas money every now and then, but the price of gas is at an all time low. You know what’s not cheap? Cars. And speeding tickets.
You don’t have to learn about cars.
Forget about auto mechanics 101. If there’s no possibility of you being stranded on the side of the road with a broken-down car, being unable to change a tire is irrelevant.
You’re never the designated driver.
Whose responsibility is it to stay sober and get everyone home safe? Not yours.
You have one less source of anxiety.
Parking lots, intersections, U-turns, parallel parking, road rage, no thank you. Riding shotgun and flipping through the radio seems like a better time.
I mean, if Gaga doesn't have her license, why should I?
