As you ease back into the familiar feeling of textbooks and lecture halls, you can feel like your life has become repetitive and redundant. Wake up, eat, go to class, do homework, sleep, repeat. Between classes and club meetings, you realize that you don’t have any time to breathe at all.
Luckily, you can find ways to brighten your day, at least through music. Here are a few suggestions, from yours truly.
Jasmine Thompson, “Do It Now”
Let me get this straight: this girl is 15. I bet you thought she was 20, right? Jasmine’s smoky, velvety voice can take anyone’s breath away; take a look at some of her YouTube covers and you’ll see what I mean. The best place to start, however, is “Do It Now,” an original.
Think pomegranate seeds, white feathers, and domed cathedrals.
Zoology, “Escape”
As you drown in homework and studying for midterms, you’ll probably wish that you were back on the beach (or, in our case, Memorial Glade) relaxing and sunbathing. “Escape” is your -- you guessed it! -- escape from the burdensome stress.
Think seafoam, vermillion orange, and strawberry fields.
The Weeknd, “What You Need”
Despite his recent success with Beauty Behind the Madness, I still miss his early material -- particularly his Trilogy album. Here’s a nice throwback from House of Balloons-era Weeknd. “What You Need” is a perfect example of spectral, innovative R&B.
Think party balloons, red stilettos, and glass tables.
Jess Glynne, “Ain’t Got Far To Go”
Chances are that you’ve probably heard of her before, from her “Rather Be” collaboration with Clean Bandit to her original “Hold My Hand.” But, “Ain’t Got Far To Go” is definitely one of her most underrated songs. It’s not only energetic and upbeat, but also empowering.
Think confetti, checkerboard tiles, and spilled bronzer.
KLOE, “Teenage Craze”
Not ready to say goodbye to your teenage years? Well, Scottish singer KLOE has the perfect farewell letter for you. “Teenage Craze” is dark and twisted, but it’s also wild and carefree. I was nothing like “Teenage Craze” KLOE when I was in high school, but it’s still a good trip down memory lane.
Think black licorice, winged eyeliner, and SoundCloud pop.
