Music videos peaked when Michael Jackson was slaying the game. VH1 kept them alive every Saturday morning with Jim Shearer and the “Top 20 Video Countdown.” However since the decline of MTV actually playing anything music related, and the introduction of internet radio like Spotify and Pandora, the art of the music video has fallen to the wayside. In case you’ve been absent from the music video scene, here’s a list of five that I think are actually worth watching:
1. "Wildfire" by Seafret
What I like about this one is that it’s real people that you’re watching. While you don’t get to hear their responses to the questions you begin to answer them yourself. And though there’s no action really happening I caught myself with a smile on my face while watching this.
2. "Hideaway" by Kiesza
I like this video because it’s filmed in entirely one shot and super fun. The video was choreographed by Ljuba Castot and nominated for an MTV Music Video Award for best choreography.
3. "Rise" by Katy Perry
If you’re not already hyped about the Olympics you will be after watching this. Katy Perry’s music videos usually involve animals or cupcakes in some strange way but this video makes me wish I were an Olympic athlete.
4. "Running With the Wolves" by Aurora
Well if you don’t know who Aurora is, you should. She’s 20 years old, and is making music more powerful than almost everyone else. This video takes place outside what looks to be a post apocalyptic city. Most of Aurora’s videos have this dark quality about them that only make them more intriguing.
5. "Sorry" by Beyoncé
From her album “Lemonade,” this is a part of Beyoncé’s second album that came out as entirely music videos. To pick one video to put on this list was nearly impossible, however I think this video really shows Beyoncé being the queen that she is (also Serena Williams is in it so what’s not to love).
