Written by August Wilson and directed by Denzel Washington, this movie tells the story of a ex-baseball player in 1950s Pittsburgh coming to terms with his life. But honestly? Watch it for Viola Davis. It's her world and we're all just living in it.

Hidden Figures

Janelle Monáe, Octavia Spencer, and Taraji P. Henson helping NASA and smashing the patriarchy. There is no better premise for a movie.

Moonlight

"Moonlight" is amazing. It tackles subjects like sexuality, addiction, socioeconomic status, and race, with an unmatched level of elegance and emotion.

Lion

Based on a true story, this film follows Saroo Brierley (Dev Patel), a man who was lost from his family at age five, and adopted into an Australian one. With the help of Google Earth, he goes on a mission to find his long lost family back in India.

Moana

Disney did their research, got help from real Pacific Islanders, cast diverse actors, and made an incredible movie. It's a beautiful, culturally appropriate movie with a realistic female lead and an excellent soundtrack.
