5. Murder on the Orient Express
Based on the Agatha Christie novel, Murder on the Orient Express dir. Kenneth Branagh, is the ensemble cast film to watch this holiday season. With the talents of Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Leslie Odam Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, and Daisy Ridley, I can’t wait to see the latest take on the classic murder mystery. Branagh stars as Christie the iconic Christie character Detective Hercule Poirot, who is tasked with solving a murder that took place on the Orient Express. The only catch? The killer is on the train and everyone's a suspect.
4. I, Tonya
Directed by Craig Gillespie, this film stars Margot Robbie who plays figure skater Tonya Harding, an Olympic ice skater who is better known for infamously planning out an attack on competitor Nancy Kerrigan during the 1994 US Figure Skating Championships. From the trailer I can tell that this film is going to be a rollercoaster from start to finish, especially with Allison Janney playing Tonya’s controlling mother LaVona Golden.
3. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
This dark comedy stars Frances McDormand as Mildred, a resident of Ebbing, Missouri who challenged the local police to find her daughter’s killer by placing three billboards on the site of the crime. This causes local law, led by Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell to battle it out with the grieving mother who only wants justice for her child’s death. Director Martin McDonagh surprised me with his comedic pacing in his earlier film In Bruges (2008), so I can’t wait to see what his latest film has to offer.
2. The Disaster Artist
I’ve been excited for this film ever since it was announced. As someone who has seen The Room more times than one person should, in my defense it is a fun movie to watch with friends, when I heard the talents of James Franco and Seth Rogen were doing their take on the making of the infamously bad film, I knew I had to see it. And based on the latest reviews, it sounds like all you need to make a great movie is to poke fun at what made your source material, in the opinion of many, the worst movie of all time.
1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
No surprise here that this movie is at the top of my list. The latest Star Wars outing is all anyone is talking about, and hopefully for good reason. I’m so excited for this movie that I’ve vowed to not look at any social media once I get home Thursday night as to avoid spoilers since for episode VII I didn’t avoid them. My excitement for the film only grew last year after it was announced that Carrie Fisher died. Although I do believe that an actor is more than just a role they played, to me and so many others, Carrie Fisher’s portrayal of Princess/General Leia showed us that women in sci-fi can be more than just the trophy female character, they can help save the galaxy too.
