I'm currently watching Gilmore Girls...for the third time...in two years. I'm not proud, but that's just how life is sometimes. I began watching the series for the first time my second or third week away at college and quickly noticed the similarities between myself and Rory (and Paris, embarrassingly), my mom and Lorelai, and my imaginary, perfect man and Luke. While the show is mostly composed of witty comebacks and delightful nostalgia for small-town living, I've learned a lot from the characters and the decisions they've made on the seven seasons. Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD. So stop reading if you're a newbie or GG virgin.
1. It's okay to change your mind
Like Rory, once I have my mind set on something, good luck getting me to change it. When she decided to go to Yale instead of Harvard, it suddenly occurred to me that what might of been the right choice last year or even last week, may not be the right decision for NOW.
2. Don't give up your future for a boy
When Jess came to Rory's dorm and asked her to run away and live with him, I thought for a passing moment that she might just say yes. I'm glad that Rory said no, because she landed up finding something greater; her life path.
3. Weird friends are the best friends
When Paris and Rory finally decided to put aside their differences and become friends, I realized that the best friends are usually the weird ones. The friends who can make you laugh because you can't believe what just came out of their mouths (or who leave a printing press in the middle of your dorm living room) are the ones worth sticking around for.
4. When someone tells you you can't do something, work even harder to do that exact thing
When Mitchum Huntzberger told Rory she wasn't cut out to be a journalist, I was furious...just like the rest of the cast. Although it did set Rory back quite a bit at the beginning, she pulled through and proved him wrong.
5. Witty comebacks cure almost any awkward situation
I keep closed captioning on when watching the show because Lorelai is the queen of under-the-breath comments and comebacks. Lorelai is truly inspiring, the way she has something to say in response to anything said to her.
I'm excited to see what this year's revival of the show holds. I hope that it teaches me more important lessons, makes me laugh, makes me fall in love with new, good looking characters, and reminds me to always listen to my mom. I hope that Rory is successful, that Lorelai is in love, and that Kirk has somehow gotten over his nude night terrors. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
