5 Lessons Taught By Younger Siblings

They may be younger, but they can still be wiser.

5 Lessons Taught By Younger Siblings

There are hundreds of ways to learn lessons each day. However, some of the best lessons I have learned have come from being an older sibling. The best part of the lessons is you strive to be a role model and set an example for your siblings, but somewhere down the road they teach you the lessons.

1. How to be your own person.

As the oldest I never had to worry about, “So you’re her younger sister or brother” I just had to always be myself. However, you didn’t have that opportunity. Instead you took away those impressions and proved that you are a completely different person and had similar traits, but that doesn’t matter you still are different and are an impeccable person all on your own.

2. How to care for someone.

Everything I couldn’t be there for it hurt. The texting mom and dad to see what your doing and how the game is going or to make sure to send me extra pictures for the dances you’re going to. I learned how to move away, but still care deeply and how to be a better sister, daughter and friend because of you two and for that I’m forever thankful.

3. Life is short, so appreciate every moment.

One of the best things about being your older sister is I had the privilege and honor of watching the two of you grow up. For the one that’s closer in age I remember almost giving mom and dad a heart attack for all the different stunts we tried to pull as kids. For the youngest, I remember the day you were born and every aspect of your life. All of the memories and watching the two of you grow up put a realization to me of how in a blink of an eye I can miss something and the last thing I want is to miss something in your lives.

4. Appreciate the little things.

Even though I don’t think either of you realize it, but the little things you do is what brings an easy smile. Whether it’s a text finding out you made honor roll or got accepted into college I couldn’t be happier. Even the text that just say “I miss you.” You both have taught me that a simple text or random act of kindness and change turn a bad day into an incredible day and for that I thank you.

5. Friends will come and go but siblings last forever.

Being the oldest meant I went first. The first for failures or success and through that I learned a lot of tough lessons. The most valuable lesson I have learned is even during the worst of times you two were always there getting me through whatever the situation was. Thank you for teaching me the value of family. I will always stand by your side and support every decision you make and defend you whenever you need me too. Through thick and thin we have always been there for each other and the two of you have always given me the support I have needed. I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done. Friends may say they are the three amigos and I say that for me and m two best friends. The three best friends, amigos and best siblings a person could have. I love you to the moon and back.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
