Before I went away to school in Newburgh, New York, I knew slim to nothing about the world of hiking. Being from Long Island, I could show you the beaches and the creeks, but that's as far as I ever got! Now, after two years of being upstate (yes, I call the Hudson Valley upstate because it is upward from where I live) I am confident in sharing these five amazing hikes that will make your summer a little more adventurous!
1. Anthony's Nose
Difficulty: 5
Distance: 2.6 miles up & back.
Located across from Bear Mountain, this Hudson Valley hike wraps around 9D and has a summit with flat open rock areas where you can sit and view the Bear Mountain Bridge. The hike starts off the side of the road and has a rocky trail that steeply ascends, followed by a moderately winding upward route. It's family and dog friendly, just never forget to bring water! (and snacks) The stunning view from the top will be well deserved at Anthony's Nose.
2. Breakneck Ridge.
Difficulty: 10 (crazy)
Distance: 3.7 mile loop
People come from far and wide to take on the challenging Break Neck Ridge. The short staircase leads around to the insane rock scramble going straight up the side of the mountain. You will be led up by white trail markers, as there are a few levels to stop and enjoy the view, until you realize you're not even at the top and keep climbing. Do NOT attempt if you are ill-prepared for some serious rock climbing. DO attempt if you want to gain access to the best views in the Hudson Valley and some awesome adventuring. The hike at Breakneck and gorgeous and unforgettable.
3. Storm King
Difficulty: 6
Distance: 2.5 mile loop
Storm King Mountain, off of 9W in Cornwall, is anything but a too-easy hike for the lover of the outdoors. It features a few stretches of moderately intense rock scrambling, ruins of old buildings, and multiple view points when you get to the top. There are a lot of open/woodsy areas to explore in on the way to the summit. You will know it when you get there! The view of the Hudson filled with sailboats is perfect on a breezy summer day.
4. Mount. Beacon
Difficulty: 5
Distance: 2.4 miles up and back
If you live in the Hudson Valley and haven't hiked Mount Beacon before, you might not even actually live in the Hudson Valley, let's be honest. This popular hike is dog and kid friendly all around! However, with some steep inclines, you are definitely in for an awesome work out. Casino ruins and alternative views are a benefit of the hike, and at the top is a large flat-rock area perfect for picnics and pictures.
5. Bash Bish Falls
Difficulty: 3
Distance: 1 mile
Tucked away smack dab on the New York/Massachusetts border, the brief, one mile, slope leading to the falls at Bash Bish lead to a truly breath-taking experience. Not only is the pool clear to the bottom, but the relaxing noise of the falls accompanied by the cool, wavy water will make you feel like you've found the fountain of youth. The main fall area is connected to the large brook that pours into another body of water surrounded by coves, and perfect for children and swimming. The falls at Bash Bish are by far my favorite Hudson Valley treasure.
