As it is Halloween weekend, many of us who are social beings will be engaging in the wondrous activity known as the Halloween party. This is a magical event where everyone dresses up and gets together to eat food, play games, talk to new people and, if you are of age, drink. With that being said, here are five things that are a necessity for a great Halloween party.
1. Costumes
As a child, Halloween was my favorite holiday. I loved to go to the store and pick out my costume. Now that I'm all grown up, I still love the aspect, but instead of going out trick-or-treating, I love going to parties because it's socially acceptable for an adult to be in a costume if they're at a party. If you're hosting a party this year, let your guests know that costumes are encouraged. It's a great way to get the conversations going and see what creative ideas people come up with.
2. Decorations
In some ways, the decorations are what set apart the pros from the amateurs in the Halloween party game. Think about it; would you rather go to a Halloween party that's just a house party with costumes or go to one that has cobwebs along the walls, bats hanging from the ceiling and the punch bowl has mist coming from the top of it? Decorations set the atmosphere for the whole party and although it may not be the topic of conversation, they won't go unnoticed. If you have the time, invest in some decorations and your party will be the place to be.
3. Games
At any party, having something to do besides eat is a great idea, and Halloween is a great way to spice things up. You can hold a costume contest, or pumpkin carving contest. Or if you are not the competitive type, there's pumpkin bowling, find the spider in the web, and many other games of that nature! And if you're over 21 you can play some fun drinking games with a Halloween theme like Edward 40 hands, or Flip, Sip or Strip.
4. Food
Food is a fantastic way to get the creativity flowing. In my opinion, food is an art form and Halloween is a great opportunity to show the world what I can do. Halloween allows for all the classics like witch finger cookies, brain pudding and eyeball cupcakes. There's so much that is possible with the Halloween theme so let loose! It doesn't have to be desserts either.
5. Drinks
This one pertains to alcohol so be advised, I do not condone underage drinking. Just like food, drinks allow for one to show creativity. Now, most parties have a punch bowl. The punch bowl is the poor college student's best friend because it bypasses the BYOB rule, so if you're willing to invest in the supply, then people will love you for it. However, there are also fun halloween themed drinks such as Blood and Sand, and the Witch's brew.
These are just a few suggestions to add to a party if you're struggling with ideas and are by no means necessary. Happy Halloween!
