5 English Words That Should Be Banned From Our Language
Tom Sodoge

Nowadays, it is not uncommon to hear foul language coming from the mouths of people of all ages. We are taught as children that there are “nice” and “bad” words. From my own experiences, it can be perceived as comical when children use distasteful language because they are unaware of the connotation of the word. However, as children develop, they are exposed to language that is no longer perceived as offensive in modern day society. Despite this idea, this does not mean that these words are not offensive to some, especially people who are a part of a targeted minority group. Below are five English words that should no longer be used.

1. Any derivation of the “N” word.

I refuse to even type this word out because the historical connotation of the word is beyond disgusting. The fact that this type of language is still prevalent in modern day society is despicable. Not only does this phrase remind us of the horrors of slavery and white supremacy, but also defaces the image of members of the African American community and others who are apart of minority racial groups. This word is still being used due to the fact that members of this minority group often use the word to refer to fellow members. However, this does not give anyone else the right to use it because their ancestors were not the ones to face years of abuse by bigots. By outsiders believing that they have the authority to continue using this type of language, we are allowing white supremacy to plague society, for now, the second time. Let’s be respectful of minorities please and thank you.

2. Spic

I cannot even begin to express how degrading this word is. Although it is less commonly used than the word above, it is used against people of Hispanic origin. The term gives my community the image of being poor, aggressive, dangerous, and overly sexual. I can honestly say I am none of those things so do not use this term against anyone else in my community. The usage of this word has especially gained popularity due to the perception of Hispanics by President Donald J. Trump. I should not have to explain why this word is offensive because it is 2017 and society should be past the days of racial discrimination and oppression, but by the looks of it, it is only going to worsen.

3. Faggot

No shock here that this word is part of the list. The term became popular during the early 1900s during the time of the World Wars due to the fact that it was often used by the American troops against their enemies. This fact alone is disgraceful because it represents how Americans were part of the effort in establishing a homophobic society that we are still combating. In modern day society, this term is used to mock the sexuality of minority groups and helps to enforce stereotypes against the LGBTAQ+ community. I have unfortunately had to hear this word not only against myself but also others way too often. If you continue to use this word, you are helping spread the message of crazed religious groups such as the Westboro Baptist Church that prides themselves off this word. At this point, we all should laugh at this disgusting group because of how ridiculous their message is and how often they use this word. Unless you feel some deep connection with their lovely leaders, change your language.

4. Retard

I honestly feel like at this point in time, the reasons why this word should not be used are self-explanatory. Dozens upon dozens of celebrities have talked about the absolutely hateful message that this word continues to spread. I am aware that for the older generations this was one of the terms used to describe a medical condition. However, the connotation of the word is blunt hatred against individuals who differ from the socially constructed concept of “normal.” I have noticed that this word is often used when an individual is trying to describe a situation that is not pleasing or is troubling. Instead of mocking yet another minority group, exchange the word for “bad,” “horrible,” “frustrating,” “stupid,” the list can go on. This word can easily be removed from the mouths of users if they become aware of the degrading effects.

5. Disability

On face value, this word does not appear to be hateful. However, this term suggests that someone is more capable of living successfully than others. This idea is entirely false. Anyone who strives to do their best will be successful. Even though it is harder to find a replacement word, the phrase, “alternatively-abled,” has become popular in modern day society to try to be more inclusive. I personally believe that this replacement term still has the connotation of inequality, however, if it is absolutely vital for a description, the replacement term is better. Please be aware of the connotation of what appears to be a socially acceptable word.

Clearly, the English language still contains multiple hateful words that degrade minority groups. If we all strive to change the way we speak, peace and understanding will prosper. It all starts with language.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
