Let’s face it: 2016 sucked. Although you probably can’t change what happens to the world in 2017, you can work on changing yourself for the better!
Resolutions get a bad rep as the project most people start but never finish. I’m here to redeem those poor little resolutions because they honestly have good intentions.
1. To exercise more.
No one’s making you run in place for a half hour! Think outside the box and focus on picking up a new physical hobby. Do a little research on the unique clubs and teams your school has to offer and try something new. Try rock climbing or Swing Dance Club. Heck, maybe you’re the next star seeker of the Quidditch Team! If just the thought of going to the gym makes you shudder, I promise you won’t keep your resolution, so why not make it fun?
2. To procrastinate less.
Invest in a planner and USE IT. Break up big projects into smaller tasks and take note of every little thing that needs to be done each day. When you mark off the easy tasks completed, you’ll feel an instant reward and more motivation to keep going!
3. To eat healthier.
If you’re trying to cut back on the excessive pizza-eating and would like to eat healthier, you don’t have to choose between plain salads or dishing out your cash at Whole Foods. Stock up on veggies at your local Winco or wherever cheap groceries are near you and try incorporating them into your usual dishes. Add some chopped onions to leftover pasta or spinach into a grilled cheese sandwich. This is a quick and easy way to add a little nutrition to your diet.
4. To cut back on spending.
Budget. Budget. Budget.
Set a reminder on your phone to check your bank account every couple of days. Having your expenses listed out for you will give you a good reality check that yes, those trips to Starbucks do add up, and maybe those few extra minutes devoted to couponing could have made a difference. Group your expenses into things you have to pay for (rent, tuition, insurance, etc.) and things you could probably sacrifice for the sake of affording heat this February.
5. To manage stress better.
Well, first of all, taking advice from the points above can definitely help you chill out in the long-run. Manage your time so that you can do the things that help you relax each day. Finish your studies earlier in the day so that you can enjoy yoga class with a clear mind. Take a run before class in the morning if that helps! Also, don’t hang out with people who bring stress into your life. Surround yourself with people who motivate you, not those who make you feel like a failure.
It's time to buckle down and get serious about doing those things you always claimed you just don't have time for. No more excuses.
It's your turn to make 2017 at least a little better than 2016. (The stakes aren't high. I promise.)
