What do you want to be when you grow up?

We often start thinking of our dream careers when we’re young. At the age of five, it’s really hard to gather what is an acceptable (and real) career. Even at a young age, we know that one day, we’re going to stop being in school and we'll start doing things in the real world, but as we grow older, our choices in career paths change rather drastically.

1. Princess

I don’t know about you, but when I first learned how to answer the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I always answered, “Princess” because you can bet your bottom dollar I wanted to live in a castle with my Prince Charming. Oh, how reality hits you like a ton of bricks.

2. Rockstar

I have vivid memories of lip syncing to Avril Lavigne back in the early 2000s, aspiring to be just like her. Trust me, if I wasn’t the absolute worst singer in the world, this would totally still be my dream job.

3. Actress

So singing doesn’t work out, but hey, acting is pretty cool too. You can take on the lives of many different characters, experiencing different ways of life. To be an actress requires a skill that I very much cannot acquire, but that never stopped me from wanting to star on the big screen.

4. Teacher

The idea of decorating your own classroom, being able to enlighten students in a fun way, and just being a role model to students is honestly inspiring. A lot of people go through the phase of wanting to be a teacher and some people stick with it. I know I wanted to be a teacher because I was truly lucky to have some pretty amazing teachers growing up.

5. ???

So here we are in college. People are changing majors left and right, people are double majoring because they have two interests and can’t decide between them. Whatever the case may be, all that dreaming from when we were younger is now this harsh reality that is sneaking up on us rather quickly. We're lucky we can decide what we want to eat for dinner, let alone decide what we want to do with the rest of our lives. While I've been pretty consistent with my dream field, where I want to go in that field always seems to sway back and forth between two different paths. And plus, how can I fit my passion for writing into my dream career? Luckily for us, college is about figuring that all out.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
