Hollywood is going through a rough time right now in terms of coming up with original ideas. Most movies nowadays are spin offs, sequels or remakes of films that we already know and love. Hollywood knows that these films worked the first time, so obviously they assume that a remake would do just as well the second time. And no company is banking on this remake trend than Disney. And while some of these remakes can be understood, like "Cinderella" and "Maleficent" since they were based off of older films, there are some upcoming ones that are a little tough to get behind.
1. 'Beauty and the Beast'
This remake is probably the one that I go back and forth on the most. The only reason that I'm not completely against it has been perfectly casted. With Emma Watson as Belle, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts and many more, the film seems to be on the right track. But, the question that keeps popping into my head is; why? Why is a remake of "Beauty and the Beast" necessary? The movie isn't really that old and it was so perfect to begin with that there aren't many changes that need to be made to it. So even though I have a little more hope for this one than the others, I still think it's a relative waste of time.
2. 'Dumbo'
I don't know who thought that "Dumbo" needed a reboot, but they need to be fired. I'm sure there could be some things that can be taken out and added from the original, however this remake is live-action. Therefore, I have almost no confidence that the movie is going to look good since Dumbo will most likely be all CGI, a Hollywood trick that a lot of people are getting sick of. Also, Tim Burton is set to direct it which just hurts so much. I love Tim Burton and the crazy films he used to make, but I don't think that "Dumbo" is a good career move. Maybe he'll prove me wrong?
3. 'Mulan'
This one falls under the same category of just, why? I mean really; why is this happening? The original is just so good and isn't old enough to really warrant a reboot.Just let people enjoy the original film, we don't need anything else.
4. 'Mary Poppins'
This weird, sequel is the one that I think is most likely to be hated once it comes out. It definitely has that possibility of being good, but "Mary Poppins" is a film that so many people connect to their childhood. Of course, all of these movies are, but "Mary Poppins" has been around the longest, so more people have personal connections to it. Which means more people will hate it if it isn't as good as the original. And lets face it, is it even possible for this sequel to be better than the beloved classic?
5. 'Winnie the Pooh'
I don't want to see Winnie the Pooh as a live-action character. Why would anyone want to see this? Why is this happening? The story is going to be about Christopher Robin returning to the Hundred-Acre Wood after he's grown up. Which is obviously a stunt to get people who grew up with Winnie the Pooh to feel all nostalgic and audiences will probably end up crying. But, if you want to feel nostalgic, watch the original movies.
At the end of the day, all of these remakes are just not necessary. They're all plot to make money off of films that Disney already knows that people like. And I love Disney. But, I want to see Disney make original things. I would take a terrible original film over an okay remake that will never be better than the original any day.
