I see article after article of things every college freshman should have for their dorms. Here's a list of things you should have, that aren't for your dorm, that will help guide you through your first year of college.
1. A group of friends (in your major).
Friends make college fun. Good, close friends make college a life-learning experience. This close group of friends will make you learn about yourself and grow as an individual constantly. Your squad, clique, crew, whatever you want to call it, are people going through the same stage of life as you. Going through any stage of life with others experience the same thing will make things easier. Knowing you're not alone builds a sense of comfort, which you are definitely going to need for the next four year.
2. A group of friends (not in your major).
Pretty much like what is explained in the first point, however; this group of friends gives you more perspective on things outside of your major. These friends are also helpful when it comes to prerequisite classes. Your major may (re: will) force you to take classes that are so outside of your major or that you have no interest in taking. Having mathematics major friends to text when you're in the middle of stats homework will come in handy, trust me.
3. A study group.
You're going to have classes that are harder than anyone expected them to be. Maybe the material is too complex or the professor is just out to get your class, but whatever the case may be, it'll be beneficial in the long run to study with people in the same class as you. Compare notes at the end of the lecture. Create flash cards. Test each other. Team work makes the dream work.
4. A professor that knows more than your name.
You're going to need recommendation letters at some point. Of course, you can always hand a professor your resume and let them do what they do best, but I find those letters will be much more flattering when the professor can truthfully speak about your personality. You also get first dibs to possible job opportunities and volunteer work. Remember: it's all about networking.
5. A hobby
Take whatever hobby that you're good at, braiding, cutting hair, sewing, and turn it into a profit. College kids love saving money and making money. Setting up shop in your dorm room both saves other students money and puts money in your own pocket. Sharpen your skills and build up your client list and you'll be able to eat out at least twice a week.
