In taking on topics like gender equality, women’s rights, beauty and double standards, here are some campaigns created to empower and promote women, their worth and their power to impact.
1.HeForShe
HeForShe was initiated by UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson, to advocate for gender equality around the world. According to its website, it is a “solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one-half of humanity in support of the other half of humanity, for the benefit of all.” It aims to involve men and boys in the movement to support women’s rights and gender equality between men and women.
2.Chime for Change
Led by Frida Giannini, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Salma Hayek Pinault, this campaign aims to empower women and girls. Founded by Gucci, it utilizes a global concert event, documentary films and other facets to shine a light on the stories of women and girls.
3.Dove Campaign for Real Beauty
Inspired by the results from a global study, this campaign acknowledges that a wider definition of beauty is needed. Since its launch in 2004, it has encouraged discussion about beauty, as it is not only defined by stereotypical standards, through online discussion, a short film, the Dove Self-Esteem Fund, a Super Bowl commercial and a mentoring program.
4.Always #LikeAGirl
This ad campaign began with a groundbreaking Super Bowl commercial, which aired in 2014. The campaign aims to shatter the negative connotations associated with the phrase “like a girl.”
5.#AskHerMore
This Twitter campaign aims to reform the questions that are asked of actresses on the red carpet. While specific questions are directed at women and what they are wearing, the campaign seeks to challenge reporters to ask questions to highlight more about the celebrities beyond their appearances.
