Graduation is close, and you are brooding on some new fears and concerns. Anxiety and anticipation grow every week, each one bringing you closer to a big, scary unknown state of being. You don’t have a job set up yet for post-graduation, or maybe you do. Either way, it’s a whole new ball game. No more tests. No more teachers. Although the textbook quizzes are over, you are going to learn a lot after you walk across the stage with your diploma. Here are some of the thoughts we students will have as we come closer to the end of our college days:
1. I don’t think I like my major anymore!
It can happen, and it is actually more common than you would think. You are about to finish the requirements for your major, having always enjoyed what you’re doing. Now that you’re about to graduate and maybe have had a little experience, you have some doubts. If these are big doubts, then it would probably be wise to act upon them. Maybe you want to change your major or add another one. Either way, it is never too late to start doing what you really want.
2. Do I get a job or apply to graduate school?
Graduate school will further your education, making you more marketable and opening new opportunities. But maybe those skills can be acquired through job training and experience in your career. Maybe your job will pay for graduate school. I think it really depends on what you want to do, and so it is wise to heavily weigh both options before making a commitment. Talk to professionals in your field and see what they did, or ask what they wish they had done instead.
3. I don’t have a job yet!
That’s OK! Sometimes it can take a while to get a job, and you may not get one until after graduation. If you haven’t yet, start putting yourself out there. Work on your resume, go to job fairs, and most importantly, make connections with people. Your friends or classmates may already have a job lined up, and could be able to connect you with an opportunity. The worst thing you can do is sit around and wait for something to show up: Take charge of your future.
4. How am I going to ever pay off my student loans?
Everyone has to deal with loans at some point, and student loans are no different. Save your money after graduation and during your first job or two. It’s likely you may have more than one in the first few years. Living with your parents may be a great low-rent or even rent free option. Live within your means and save save save! You will pay them off in a blink of an eye, and it won’t do you any good to worry about it now.
5. I don’t want to live with my parents!
A lot of people can’t imagine living with their parents once they graduate college. It is understandable, and there is the option of living with roommates. We all know how living with roommates can go though, so be careful who you decide to live with. It might be worth the sacrifice of living at home in the long run.
The best advice I can give as someone facing some of these fears herself is this: There is no right way to do life. You can only do what you think is best for you. There is no right or wrong path to take. People can give you advice and share their own regrets, but in the end, you chose your own path. Yes, graduation is intimidating, but the real world is not as big and scary as you think, and you’re also more prepared than you think. You have come a long way during the past few years of college, so don’t let fear of the unknown drag you down! We can do this!
